Legacy FW11 5150 (Gojira - Esoteric Surgery)

harsh

Inspired

So...Lots of stuff happened last week. I bought 2 new guitars over the week, and I plan to record a clip with each of them. I also upgraded to Logic Pro X, and was heartbroken to have lost all my cool 32 bit plugins, but then FW11 came out and cheered me up. Anyway, the first guitar is a prototype by a new UK based guitar company called Loki Guitars. I upgraded the pickups to BKP Aftermaths, and this bad boy kicks ass. Check them out at Home / Loki Guitars and Accessories.

I recorded this track using Logic's stock plugins. Check it out and let me know what u think!

Love Gojira!

Good playing and tone man! I think the snare could be tighter and with a little less reverb, but the rest of the kit sounds pretty good for a stock plug-in.

Thanks! I really struggled with that snare. The snare on The Way of All Flesh is ridiculously good. It has that "pop" of a harware compressor and a lot of reverb - I actually have way less reverb than the album, but yeah, I usually have it more dry. Thanks for the feedback, though :)

Haha, it's not a backing track. I played all the instruments (drums are Superior Drummer, and I played all guitars and bass). Glad you like it...merci beaucoup.
Huge ! I'd really love to see how can be achieved such a good drum sound, would you share the sd preset ?
Did you use the axefx for bass too ?

Thanks :). But it's not a preset either. It's stock Metal Foundry without any processing or plugins. I route each drum mic to an independent channel in Logic, and I process all drums independently in the DAW.

The bass is Axe FX as well, but that is split into 3 different frequencles in the DAW (low, mid, high) and then into 3 channels (DI, slightly driven and distorted), processed independently, and then blended into one buss.

Ok !
What metal foundry kit ?

No i meant kits (different source sounds for each instrument) but i didnt remember there was only one in MF ;)

EDIT : There are definitely multiple kits in MF : Sonor, DW, Tama and Ludwig !

Ah, I see. Its the default kit, so I guess that would be Sonor? I'm at work right now, so cant verify exact settings.

sounds killer!!!
I wish Icould program drums this well :(
if you don't have it already get the Andy Sneap pack , it really tightens up the drums in Metal foundry

Ah, thanks dude, thats really kind of you :). Thing is, I've played around with a number of presets, and they all really work, but I'd like to get to the point where I'm ready to mix live drums, so it's good to practice this way, and learns all the nuances that go into mixing them. I think my drums still sound very "fake/programmed", so I still have a LONG way to go.

I like that approach :)

I've made a small change to the master bus, snare reverb and the guitar EQ. Makes a big difference, thought I'd share here anyway. New link added to original post.

Definitely sounds better. Still something about that snare though. I HAD to go listen to the album version - They definitely have a tighter/crisper snare sound, and a bit drier on the reverb. Still sounds awesome! I'm just being picky though, sorry!! :lol

Didn't realise it was superior drummer - I really want/need to get it for my own setup. I think it sounds pretty natural in most parts but some bits do sound more fake/programmed, particularly the fast snare rolls. Have you tried playing around with the velocities?? Makes a big difference. I remember reading somewhere that SD/Metal Foundry doesn't have the "humanize" function, so you have to do it manually which takes FOREVER - but well worth it for the end result if you want more "real" sounding drums.

Your best bet is to reroute all of the drums to your daw then mix them from there. Superior plugins are ok but your daws are way better. Then sample out the kick/snare with drumagog or another program. This will make your drums sound HUGE!!!!!!
