What does the "front instrument level" in the I/O section really do?

Hello Everybody,

(Sorry to ask such newbie questions, but I looked through the forum and couldn't really find anything. I have an XL, if that helps.)

There is the “front instrument level” in the Axe FX's I/O section, with a gain from 0% to 100%. I’m supposed to turn this down until my guitar doesn’t clip at the input ADC (Analog to Digital Converter), right? My guitar has active pickups (EMG), and needs to go down to 20%, or perhaps even less; does this make sense?

Regarding software, is the intent of this setting to do away with “hot” or “weak” pickups but just view all pickups as having the same strength (basically being normalized)? Or, does this parameter get used later in the software to adjust for the fact that I have hot pickups that would presumably change the sound of the amp?

Thanks so much for your help,
