The Dumbles, holy crap, the DUMBLES!

I haven't revisited the Dumbles (other than the Fuchs, which has its own midrange thing going on) for a couple firmwares, and I have to say that the ODS-100 Lead is absolutely killing in FW 14. Mix it with the OH EV-L and 65-RI cabs and it is insane. Chirps better than the birds that wake me up in the morning!

It sings on the bridge pickup full on, it cleans up nice for those 2 and 4 position riffs, and it lets all that hollow Strat neck single coil fatness ring through, including those occasional bouts of fingerpickin' when the jazz mood kicks in.

:encouragement:Yea, I never had a lot of interest in the Dumble sound, but after a week or two of my vintagy Strat sounding too thin and bright at church, I dialed up a patch with the OD2 amp, and I really like what I'm getting! I have a lot more exploration to do with this amp type, but I'm digging it so far!

I revisited my Dumble patches last night & thought the exact same thing. And, of the Dumble group, the ODS100 stood out to me, too. Single or humbucker. It's definitely a lead tone I want to experiment with some more.

+1

Since V13 I've finally bonded with the Dumbles.

With my Strat they sound best with the bridge pup and the tone control rolled almost off. That is a great sweet spot for the guitar and amp together. You have to make the amp overly bright at first. But when you get the gtr tone control in that spot... instant success.

i really have no clue whats "THE" dumble sound nor i havnt heard any dumble in real life yet, BUT, i really adore the ODS-Clean Model in Axe FXII, it sounds so great to my ears!

By all means it seems that we should step through the Dumble "Door" now to have what these guys are having!

Yeah, I had a decent Dumble patch that I didn't use that much until I tried it with single coils. That sound is awesome with anything really bright. I have an Andersion hollow T with M's (small bright humbuckers) and an Anderson Classic strat with singles. They both sound epic with a Dumble patch.

Robben Ford had some killer tones out of his Dumble. So dynamic and sweet.
Saw him and Danny Gatton together back in the day. I didn't know who Robben Ford was at the time. Blew me away!

The Dumbles really wake up if you play with a light touch. Dial in a mid-gain tone to sound sweet with a light pick hand. It'll go from angelic singing to a slamming body punch with only subtle variations in your picking/fretting.

As someone that had and used for several years an actual ODS made for them by Howard way back when, I think the ODS 100 Lead from I think FW13 on is pretty killer. I've never cared for the Dumble or clone models previously on the Axe II or actual amp clones themselves for that matter, they all sound horribly nasal. I'm not sure if this is a modeling problem as this also seems to be a characteristic of most every actual Dumble clone, a sound which I find uninteresting and not much different than a Fender and a Tube Screamer.. I haven't used a Dumble since the early 80's, but I don't ever remember it sounding like that at all. The ODS 100 Lead may be the the first Dumble attempt at amp or model that I actually find pleasing. Great job FAS!

Thank you. That makes dropping $50K+ on the actual amp less painful, LOL.

Forget the porn guitar sound track kings (Ford and Carlton) -- listen to Rick Vito (Bob Seger) and David Lindley (Jackson Browne).

Classic hall of fame rock guitar solos all done on Dumbles.

Was David using Dumbles on the Runnin' on Empty tour? Or was that Marshall's?

I don't know. I've played four Dumbles, including Santana's before he bought it from UltraSound. Two were OK amps, not worth $1,000 each IMO. One was good, worth $3,000 to me and one was great, not $75,000 great, but great none the less.

Dumble made his amps for the customer, to fit the customer's other gear and idea of good tone. Of all the Dumbles, there are probably fifteen that are great and the rest ride the tide, like 1959 Les Pauls.
