Starting looper in AE

I'm sure this will qualify as a dumb question. But, why won't the looper start when I hit record in AE (or when set to "threshold")?

When I hit record, it just flips back to off.

Note: I can start recording using the front panel, but not AE.

Also, I do not see anywhere to change the "advanced settings" referred to in the manual & Wiki. IE: 60 sec mono, stereo, undo...

If "Threshold" is turned on then recording will not start until you start playing and the input level has passed the specified threshold. This is a tool to help you start right on the downbeat for example.
