Amp Builders/Techs - Weigh in on standby switch

So I saw a facebook post on standby switches being a BAD amp design feature today and it linked to this Wampler blog post on it...

My electronics knowledge is pretty basic, just up to grade 12 level so I was wondering what some of the more knowledgable people would have to say about it? (And also hope maybe Cliff might weigh in with his opinion since he has what I would consider pretty high levels of understanding on tube function.)

One of the things in the article mention that builders only include them to cut down on support calls. The "Why doesn't that have a standby? So you can sell me more tubes?" I thought this might be something similar to Cliff's quiz on the "Why does the treble pot have a series resistor?"

Don't know much about electronics but personally, I use the stand by switch when the other guitar player is taking his solo. Isn't that what its for?
