The overall approach works with any drive source. I've done it with Plexis, HBEs, and fuzz pedals before. It'll work with small Fenders too. Basically anything. With really responsive amps like a Trainwreck, you can't get away with as large of variations, or the tones vary too much to sound like...

If I'm understanding the documented options correctly (I'm not in front of my II to confirm), that's what gave me the DLY = 2 delays count. Is there something I'm missing?

So far I'm not entirely sold on the Axe Fx 3....

You just listed a bunch of newer things. The iPhone 5 I'd been using for work (until very recently) wasn't able to get OS updates, or app updates that required the new OS. That doesn't mean the apps I had on there or the older OS "stopped working".

I think the original post (from Feb 1st) sourcing that signup suggestion has been deleted/hidden. Other posts reference it. FA can honor or ignore it as they wish, but emailing to get your name on the waitlist has been the process since the Standard.

Looks like you worked through this on your own, but you're on a path to great clear (not clean) gain tones: Try dialing in your more/full drive setting first. Then duplicate that on a second amp, but adjust the gain (or sometimes amp volume) -1 or -2 (o'clocks?), then layer that in -3-6 dB...
