U2 is now officially a Las Vegas lounge act!

I really hate seeing my heroes try to hold on for dear life at any cost (Joe Montana, Tom Brady, any number of classic rock acts, etc, etc...) and was totally unaware U2 is now essentially a Las Vegas lounge act!!! I haven't watched many Rick Beato videos lately, but had to see this. He's absolutely right.

It's hard to believe U2 of all bands would become a lounge act.

Can't help but wonder if live music will head this way: bands that play in locales and fans travel to see them along with tourists.
I think it's just a certain demographic of groups that head that way. There will (hopefully) continue to be demand for touring bands.

It's just weird to see a band like U2 doing this. It just smacks of complacency and selling out.

But, hey, it's a free country and $$$ talks.

They've paid their dues touring since the late 70's. I think they've earned the right to set up shop somewhere and let their fans come to them for a change. Call it selling out all you want, but they are still entertaining people and making money. More power to them.

Think about it this way. Ozzy just cancelled all tours permanently. Wouldn't it be nice to still have somewhere to go see him perform again someday? Some folks just can't (or just don't want to anymore) handle life on the road. That shouldn't mean they have to stop performing. Look past the old stereotype of the "Vegas Lounge Act" and see it as an opportunity to still see an act that doesn't want to fight the many battles of tour travel anymore.

+1. They seem to be eager to play live shows, but I'm sure the grind of a tour must be daunting at this point in their career. This seems like a good compromise.

I think you guys missed the point and also points brought out in the video by Rick (did you even watch the vid?). Right now they are just a caricature of U2 with a replacement drummer doing a lounge act in LVNV.

My only commentary is that I perceive it as a little sad and it cheapens their legacy, that's all.

Not really, IMHO. I doubt I'd go see him these days even if it was free. He was great. He left his mark on the world. Now it's time to rest on those laurels.

Why not? If playing at a local bar maintains their fan-base, the only other thing that bar patrons are doing are eating/drinking/watching sports. Playing to local bars help them make friends with the general public, and cultivates and builds their current fan-base for the future. Thumbs up, here. We have plenty of large clubs (some currently active, some defunct) that wouldn't waste a second signing U2 to their venue.

However, as much as this might be a lead-in to St. Patrick's Day, I'd honestly wait until the hype played out until trying to attend a U2 bar scene. There might likely be scenarios I've not thought of that would likely be a negative result of this, so, meanwhile, spend your time helping your kids with their grades in school. They might need that more than you would need see U2.

I watched Rick's video yesterday. He seems sad that Larry won't be there, but since he doesn't know any of the details about why that is, it seems to me it isn't right for him to draw any conclusions from that.

Way easier logistics letting the fans come to you than taking the show on the road.

More permanent stage setup that doesn’t need to travel and have set up and tear down, far less crew, can have families stay with you at hotel or maybe rental home, no fuel for buses and planes, no jet lag etc.

I can’t really say I’d see any downside to it, especially if you’ve already seen the world a few times

Tough crowd.

I believe Larry just had one or more surgeries. He's entitled to heal, and the band is entitled to do some shows without him if everybody wants that, and I'm quite sure they decided to do this as a group, all of them.

Show must go on, ya know. It's not like they need the money.

Getting old has it's disadvantages! I guess winding up in Vegas is one of them.
Every time I hear an act is going to Vegas an image of Wayne Newton pops into my head! :tearsofjoy: Maybe they'll do a cover of Danke Schoen!

Ha! Honestly I thought he was dead, He is playing the Morongo resort in April! only reason I know is I saw the billboard on the 10fw on my way to Home Depot. I guess when you have outlived the crowds in Vegas you land at the Indian casino resorts, oh well you have to pay the bills somehow.

After that it's Branson, MO. Maybe we'll see Bono and Edge there in another ten years! :D

So playing in lv is not a negative imo, most venues here in bay area are are not desirable places to go for music or anything for that matter. a lv residency allows people to experience and quality performance in an safe and fun environment. lv is is a fun place to visit and see shows imo.

I totally agree. They'll save money. Great food also. Vegas is not just for lounge acts. I played Las Vegas years ago on the same bill with Allan Holdsworth. Definitely not a lounge act.

btw, you can always visit joshua tree with a ipod, lol...
I believe theirs is a significant entertainer there this weekend if I'm not mistaken...
