I was talking the other day about some tones I would like to dial in with my Axe II which of course led to the topic of some of my all time favorite rhythm guitar tones. Off the top of my head here are some in no specific order but divided by 5 per decade.

1970's
Joe Walsh- Rocky Mountain Way
AC / DC- Highway to Hell
Peter Frampton Comes Alive
Van Halen 1
Foghat-Fool For the City

1980's
Ratt-Lay it Down/You're In Love
Dokken-Back For the Attack
Metallica- Master of Puppets
Iron Maiden Live After Death
Ozzy/Jake E Lee- Ultimate Sin outro

1990's
Alice In Chains- Damn That River
Savatage-Handful of Rain (the song)
Stuck Mojo- Here Comes the Monster
Aerosmith-Eat The Rich
Dream Theater- Awake

2000's
Sevendust- Tits on A Boar
Tool- Rosetta Stoned
Disturbed-Down With The Sickness
Machine Head-Hellalive CD
Slipknot-Opiate of the People

2010's
Art Of Dying- Vices & Virtues CD
Papa Roach-Burn
5 Finger Death Punch- Under and Over It
Bullet For My Valentine-Your Betrayal
Judas Priest-Epitaph tour (saw them live on that tour awesome tone)

As I am sure you can see I am a hard rock kind of guy and that was just an off the top of my head list I haven't gone back to see if I still dig em all...

I look forward to seeing what anyone else will contribute if at all...

Hard rock?? Probably ACDC. Most of their stuff is just pure grit.

Lots of the stuff you've cited I couldn't agree more with, but I'd say it lays on the side of prog/metal more than hard rock. Semantics, whatever.

I can see that especially with the Tool, DT, Savatage but if you listen to the guitar tone on Tool's 10, 000 Days its really about the best tone for pure modern hard rock I think I have ever heard

I'm not going to argue anything when it comes to Adam's tone. He's got an exquisite mix of amps/fx and it sounds incredible. One of my all time fave "guitarist's tones" out there, ever since Undertow really.

Also like some of the stuff that Wes Borland has conjured in the past; and obviously the host of regulars:
Jerry Cantrell
Stef Carpenter
Devin
Billy Corgan
yada yada...

Memphis may fire(Challenger tone)
Blessthefall(Witness and Awakening)
A day to remember(All of there albums tone)
Underoath(Albums 2004-2010)

as far as heavy tones go, Memphis May Fire's Challenger album sets the bar for me....really as an album, period....one of my all time favs

Aerosmith eat the rich. What killer tone. Both bass and guitar.

Creedence- proud Mary, down on the corner
The who- who are you, my generation
Zz top- la grange, sharp-dressed man
AC / DC- If you want blood, shoot to thrill
Zeppelin- black dog
Van Halen- ice cream man, Panama, Hot for Teacher
Ratt- Round 'n' Round
Whitesnake- Here I Go Again, Still of the Night
Stone Temple Pilots- Dead & Bloated
Metallica- One, King Nothing
ACDC- big gun
Alice In Chains- Man in the Box
Aerosmith- just push play
Bush- Machine Head
Motley Crue- Dr Feelgood
Everclear- Santa Monica
Third Eye Blind- 1000 July's, wounded, 10 days late
switchfoot- dare you to move
Thousand foot Krutch- Phenomenon, Rawkfist
Disciple- Rise Up, God of Elijah
P.O.D.- southtown, Boom, set it off

Much more, but that's off the top of my head

Kim Mitchell - Go For Soda

I've always loved that tone all around! Clean punchy single coil in the intro, massive guitar when it kicks in, growly bass in the verses.

Black Sabbath - Snowblind
Schuldiner's tone on Individual thought patterns
Eric Johnson on Ah via musicom
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe
Alain Johannes - Euphoria morning
David Gilmour - Delicate sound of thunder
Jason Becker - Perpetual burn
John Petrucci - Awake
Jerry Cantrell - Dirt
Cream - Disraeli gears
Adrian Belew - Thrak tones

Those are some of my favourite rock to metal tones. I tried it not to go deep into metal though, otherwise I would have kept on going.
