The bottom line is: it's not reasonable to expect that IRs won't need level adjustments. The level controls are there for a reason :).

I discovered another artifact. It turns out some mic options are significantly lower output than others. I switched to a different mic and cab and now the volumes are "normalized" Previously I was using the R-121, switched to the MD-121 and it's fine now.

FYI - I heard back from celestion and they acknowledged there is a problem with normalization in some of the IRs in this package and they are going to re-process them and reset my download count!
