What amplification do you use with your FM9 when playing live?

I have a question for FX users w/EVPMX12s
Me: With new EVPMX12s in hand and soon to test,
Tell me...
  • do you use the XLR or ¼” from FX output to the PMX?
  • what distance?
  • What output level you use on the Fx(-10db)? w/a drummer?
  • What is your go to default setting on the EVPMX?
  • How do you deal with intentional rf interference?
I’m sure I’ll figure things out myself, but cool to hear any input…

Cheers…
  • XLR
  • Wedges directly in front of me (not at gigs, those are IEM / silent stage)
  • -10dB but Output knob set about 35% and EV volume at 0. Lots of variables there...
  • Monitor 2
  • I don't understand the question. What is "intentional rf interference"?

Thank you @unix-guy for the fast response, I'm going to go with this setup.... the question of intentional interference is when you play live where intentional RF is generated. CB or Liner Amps in the vicinity. peps Keying up on RF w/power amps...
that was a thing in the day... maybe not so much now but I doubt it....

I've been performing a long time and never heard that term...

No experience with any noise in my home only use case.

Home basement studio use only so far.

XLRs, Monitor 2 setting, volume at noon on PXM, quite low on the Axe, maybe 9-11 on a clock face. PXMs on short stands maybe 6-8 feet away, not quiet.

Don't think I've run into CB interference for maybe 40 years :)

Another PXMer here. I had a pair of HR 108s, but they weren't cutting it and just had too much color themselves.

I just use the PXMs to move air a little bit on stage and balance out the "real" amp of the other guitarist. I run in Monitor 2 mode from my Output 2. I have been using the +4 dB setting on the FM9, but not sure that is necessary/appropriate.

I have two of them, but usually only run one in this situation. I've used both for live "in the room" situation with no FOH. These things stay together really well at high volume (unlike the HRs) and I can keep up with just about any real amp when running two.

I had a pair or HR 12s with my AX8 and briefly with the FM3, HRs were ok, I liked them when I was by myself however I struggled with a Hard Rock band and passionate drummer. I sold them... Looking forward to testing the EV's out and see how the modeling comes across...

nice picture @Piing! how do you like the EV5 with with the FM3? I was thinking of using my EV5s in place of the FAS EV1s to lighten up my Temple board a bit... How do you like the Fender Tone Master? I was looking at those but I've been a long time EV person so went with the PMXs.
Cheers
The Roland EV-5 is great. Not metallic, but solid as a rock. I have been using the same one since I got the VG8 in 1995. 30 years stomping on it without any issue.

After playing with several powered monitor solutions, I am 100% happy with the FR-12. Besides the positive side of the real amplifier aesthetics, it also has more "guitar punch" feeling while maintaining FRFR integrity.

Hi there! Do you also run a bass through that fr12? Was wondering about flexibility. I would mainly use fr12 for guitar but it would be nice to know that I could use as monitor for a bass playing gig with a band! Thanks!!
No. The bass goes to a Fender Rumble 100.

Used a CLR or EV PXM for years.
Now with Raezers Edge stereo 2x12 FRFR.

I used a stereoTraynor K4 frfr amp before and experienced phase cancelling issues with the TC2290 delay blocks of my Axe Fx 2 by the time. This was due to the common speaker compartment . A stereo cab would work correct only if it has a physically separated and rigid compartment for each speaker.
If you want to go stereo on stage monitors I'd go for 2 smaller 10" or 12" wedges.

Sorry, I don't believe your statement is true.
I have had stereo amps going back years starting with a Peavey stereo chorus 400 which still sounds fantastic to this day.
Roland JC-120 is another stereo amp that works great.
I don't experience any phase canceling or any problems with a stereo 2X12 cab.

Do those amps (which by the way are probably not stereo input) phase reverse one side?

He specifically mentioned the 2290 which has a specific configuration that can result in phase cancellation.

Exact, does concern 2290 delai that phase inverses 180°. With L/R speaker in the same box it's at least a nice lesson of physics.

I run my FM3 into a Fryette PS2 and Mesa 1x12 slanted Recto cab, pre-dynacab. The XLR signal to the board goes through the dynacab.
I should add that I recently acquired two LD Systems Icoa speakers to use for a wet-dry-wet with my above mentioned setup. It sounds absolutely fantastic with reverb, delay and modulation effects, but it is a beast to setup and will only be used rarely. The Icoas can double up as spare PA speakers, or be used with my Nord Stage (I am a multi-instrumentalist).

So finally got a chance to take new EV PMX12s for a test drive, I went with UnixGuys suggestion on Monitor 2 for the speaker, and was quite pleased on how my headphone presets sounded with speakers for the first time.

I made some adjustments rolling off the lower freq's and found the tones supper pleasing.

I will say I tried unity gain across everything and was disappointed, volume was not loud at all, so had to crank up the output block to full throttle...
Yes,... Mad Max...

So any suggestions on modifying the FM9 signal path so 2 PMX12s perform louder with unity gain will be appreciated...

Fwiw, i use 2 PXMs with an Axe 3 1st gen, XLR outs, monitor 2, PXM volume at noon, Axe output volume knobs pretty low, like 9 - 11 clock face. It's as loud as i would want to be in the room with.

Not sure if an FM9 would be the same.

for me on the fm9..
preset leveled to unity
output at +4db
output2 knob at noon

on the ev:
input gain at unity
volume at - 5
monitor2 (when on flr: other is on/set to tripod)
eq flat

it's pretty dang loud. 95-100db
