Using the FX Loop for Gibson Echoplex EDP (Placement/Level)

Ive just got a Gibson Echoplex EDP (http://www.loopers-delight.com/tools/ec ... oplex.html) as I needed a more extensive looper than the one on the Ultra and Im having trouble setting it up in the FX loop.

Whenever I have the EDP in the loop I cant get enough volume out of it to match the volume of the patch with the Loop bypassed. I have the loop set up at +13.5db (as loud as it goes) and its still very quiet. Whenever I raise the Input/Output controls to compensate on either the AFX Ultra or EDP the Output on the AFX clips (red light comes on on "Out2").

I want the EDP setup in the loop so I can route all Amps, Cabs and pre amp effects to it but leave all the post amp effects in the axefx (chorus, delay, panning, verb) after it so I can keep those stereo (The EDP is mono). To do this I currently have the FX loop block after the cab.

Any ideas on the best setup for the two? I think I remember someone on the board using a EDP with the Axefx but cant remember who it was!

Cheers!

I use an older EDP in the loop of my Ultra, and I know what you're talking about in terms of level setting (I may have been the poster you referred to). I've recently set the levels so that they work as well on or bypassed.

On your Axe-FX, try setting the Output to your EDP to full on, and adjust the input so that you're "orange" on average, "red" rarely. Start with the "mix" on the EDP set at 12:00. Keep adjusting your EDP input and toggling the Axe-FX "Effect Bypass" until your volumes match. You may have to turn the Ultra output to EDP back a bit as you adjust. Note that I don't use high-output amps with the EDP yet. Note that in this setup I'm using S/PDIF out for audio/recording, but that shouldn't make a difference.

It was just recently that I was able to get my levels adjust correct - I was about to give up when I finally got it. Good luck.

Here's something real-time ambient stuff I did with the Ultra and EDP as proof of concept: http://lainhart.net/Music/Two.mp3

Thanks tlainhart, that seems to have helped but where are you finding the best place to place it in the chain, pre or post amp/cab block?

I use it post amp, before the reverb/cab/eq blocks.

Are you guys processing the EDP separately from your guitar? I don't own an Axe-FX yet, but am hoping to be able to process my guitar and EDP independently. Maybe a little delay on the guitar and some chorus/filter/delay/reverb on the EDP. Is this do-able? How about switching presets when the EDP is looping. Is there a noticeable dropout? Thanks.

The Axe-FX has four separate "lines" (rows) between input and output, and so you can place your FX loop on one of those parallel rows with just your chorus/filter/delay/reverb and EDP, and your main guitar/delay on another.

I've not tried switching presets w/ an FX loop. I've read that it's supposed to work (I think), as long as both presets have similarly configured FX loops. I've also read that there's a little dropout.

Todd, thanks for the response. If you get a chance to try switching presets, I would be interested in hearing back from you on how it works/sounds.

BTW, I really liked your posted ambient piece. Very nice.
