Bug? Usb audio not working

I just received an axe 2 XL+. Everything works great on its own but I am having an issue I cannot figure out while using it for usb audio. I am running Mac OSX El Capitan, installed drivers per instructions but am having playback and recording issues. For normal playback, through iTunes, Youtube, or other audio sources it sounds almost like a latency issue. It is abound with pops, crackles clicks etc. The bigger problem I am having though is trying to use it as my interface while recording. I have my project set to a 48k sample rate as I have found is required. Immediately after setting the Axe Fx to be the audio interface, everything appears to look fine, levels are good coming in, sound quality is good, but about 30 seconds after, the input goes berzerk, clips the input meters at their absolute max and there is nothing but noise. After about a minute it will settle back down to normal levels until you touch a string again and it immediately clips back out and holds. Switching back to the built in computer inputs/outputs, then back to the Axe Fx, the problem repeats.

I cannot find anyone else with evidence of this issue, looking for an idea of which way to go.

Thanks!

there is a usb audio return level adjustment in the I/O menu. it is set to a -db # buy default.

Yes, I have adjusted this level. The problem seems to be the audio coming out from the axe to my computer. It starts out at normal good volume. For about 30 seconds after being selected as the interface, incoming level is around -10db on my DAW input and the sound quality is good, so I would believe all of my level settings are correct. After 30seconds or so, just outputs noise at +6db. I've been recording audio for nearly a decade and I've never seen something do anything like this. Ill try to get a video or audio sample after work tonight.

Thanks for the fast response.

I could be wrong but this sounds like a problem with the USB driver on the Mac... and possibly also related to your DAW. The forum has seen quite a few postings regarding issues on El Capitan but they don't seem very consistent which makes it difficult to find a solution.

I did assume it could be something driver related. It is demonstrating the symptoms in multiple daws however and I have been using both stably for years. I do have two other usb interfaces that are both working correctly as well, so this leads me to believe it would be something on the axe fx side of things. I spent hours verifying the rest of my system is working correctly.

I actually thought the driver was Apple provided (i.e. by the OS) since the Axe FX is a class compliant device?
