Unnatural sounding 'fizz' on sustained notes

Nice!!!!

This whole REW (or whatever variant you prefer) revolution is amazing. I've used similar tools to sort out my studio monitors and my HiFi at home. No idea why it did not occur to me to use it on the Headrush boxes.

I can even set up Out2 as a dedicated connection for them and just EQ that. Thanks!
What did you use to apply the REW curve you measured to your stereo?

@Cuiken Sounds like you are getting a handle on this and likely not the issue, but I might also take a look at my noise gate settings on the input block. Improper threshold settings there are more commonly responsible for clamping down too early and causing notes not to sustain properly. But it might be worth checking anyway.

Okay, got 15 minutes to try this out. I'm not sure it does much to reduce the effect I started this post with but, holy moley, does it work with clean tones!

Not that there was an issue with clean tones before but, with those EQ tweaks, the Fender Deluxe models in particular are just so convincing.

Thanks again for sharing.
Glad I could help, but the real credit and thanks go to the user who originally started that message thread.

Having owned at least a dozen different tube amps, my first being a 1979 JMP 2104, I can tell you this effect is incredibly realistic. It's astounding really what Fractal has accomplished. And yeah, it can be annoying and I remember tube rolling that 2104 (back when you got tubes from Radio Shack and before tube rolling was a 'thing') to try to get rid of it. Just enjoy the realism!

I spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours to nail that realism.

The watershed moment came when I hooked up a JCM800 to one side of a stereo cab and an Axe-Fx to the other side. The JCM800 had all this crackly, fizzy distortion on the decay that the Axe-Fx didn't do. That sent me back to the drawing board and was the genesis for our latest modeling.

It is astounding. Last night I was on the Diamanté Fire and it is a filthy beast with all the noise it makes. To someone noticing that for the 1st time it’s not surprising they would think something was wrong. Do any of the other modelers do this to any degree?

Cliff, I’ve been on in ears for ten+ years. Close mic’d cabs, Palmer DI, and IR’s straight to my ears. Over 1000 gigs in this time frame using a 5150, Ecstasy Classic, and Suhr PT15ir before getting the FM9. The fizzy crackle is more on the Fractal. It appears earlier and takes over the decaying note in a way I find unpleasant.
I have on several occasions played through a big PA out in the room and still hear the fizz.
My Ecstasy Classic had the cleanest decay of the amps I’ve used on ears. My main preset in my FM9 uses the Euro Blue and Red models. The models have a noticeable increase in decay fizz compared to my amp.
I get it. I’m referencing one amp, but you also only reference that one jcm800 whenever this topic pops up.

Is there a way to tame this effect?
Do all models behave the same way or do they follow the examples you’ve modeled?

I’m not debating whether real amp fizz on decay, they do. I just feel the fractal emphasizes it.

When Fractal models and amp it gets a servicing, fresh tubes, and all that.

Maybe your tubes are old?

I know the Fractal can switch out tubes with ease, I wonder if it could “age” them.
