understand mic preamp

hi guys, anyone can help me to understand mic preamp? i have read block guide, but is dont understand so much.
I have two parameters, drive and saturation, drive set the gain of preamp and if VU exceeds the 0db the preamp distorts correct? Saturation i dont understand what does it do.
can someone explain me better?
