TRS Footswitches - How do they work? And FM3 compatible?

each Pedal port on the FM3 can host up to 2 switches. so 3 or 4 switches over 1 cable do not work.

a Boss FS6 with a TRS cable or 2 FS5U with a TS > TRS Y cable would work.

A switch like this uses 2 wires to make a circuit.

The switch will either be "open" (meaning the electrical continuity is "broken" - no electric current can pass from 1 side of the switch to the other) or "closed" (meaning the current can pass).

That is for a single button switch.

A 2-button switch with a TRS cable is the same - each button uses 2 wires. But in this case, they share a wire in common: the ground wire. The TRS cable (and jack) have 2 wires.

The Fractal (and many other devices) can detect via these 3 wires what state each switch is in (opened or closed).

There's more complexity involving "latching" vs "momentary" switches.

A latching switch latches the state until pressed again (the state toggles between opened and closed).

A momentary switch will only change state from open to closed (or closed to open) while the switch is pressed.

Momentary is typically the preferred choice for Fractal.

The either/or regarding momentary is depending on whether the switch is "normally open" (meaning it's always an open state except when pressed) or "normally closed" (meaning it's always a closed state except when pressed).
