Tonematch or IT this is the question

I think this could be the best place for this question, sorry if not.

I have been a long time Axe FXII user 6 year but just created presets since work takes me away for long periods of time I have always wanted a portable FXII but it hasn't appeared.
3 months ago I saw Geof Tates operation mindcrime and they were using Macs onstage as well as a drum kit and keyboard no amps. I asked the guitarist what software they were using and he said guitar rig. Which I had tried before with poor results . I then realised Kelly Gray had probably made some IR's or tonematch's

The question can I tonematch a present off the axe fx and run it through main stage on my Mac maybe using can lab 3 ?

Was thinking I might try to record me playing through a patch then tonematch against it to create an ir and see what the results will be.
I remember Scot P doing an acoustic ir that i use but i dont know if i have everyghong i kneed as i dont have any mics so hope I can do it over usb
