Thoughts on ‘chasing tone’

M@ nailed it imo. The destination is one thing, but the impact the journey has on you is more important... or it’s not.

I'm all for the chase...because I'm not good enough of a tone shaper for folks to say "oh man that tone sounds just like so & so, and if/when that day ever comes, I'll know to keep going because I might be getting real gooder lol

There is a difference though between studying the past and I have to have Gilmour's sound because without it I am nothing!

Well your example is a bit too extreme imho! Who is really thinking that way?!
I put it down more simple: If i want to cover Comfortably Numb or SOYCD i need THAT DG's sound, because it's signature and evocative sound and THAT sound make THE SONG.
Not all the Guitar Super Stars have a too sophisticated guitar tone... many of them make good music with a simple guitar+amp tone.
Many others are "tone-maniac" so.... you can ear just a single note and say "this is XXX and the song is YYY".
Going deep inside those tones is a learning journey about tone's in general and the AxeFx power.
Then you can apply what you have learned to sculpt your personal voice!
