As an aspiring banjoist myself I can only say that this guy is not really playing the banjo, but the guitar on a banjo. He's incredibly talented, though.

Yup! Not banjo style. Banjo is my first instrument, and he's playing more like an Irish Tenor banjo than Bluegrass, which are completely different styles and tunings.
