They All Sound the Same Again

1- Amp? - A little more open sound and more "dynamic". To be fair the dynamic difference I could only note by looking at the spectral peaks on the DAW. Not by ear!

There is more bass overall in number 2, however there is more bass transients in some parts on number 1. In the last chord we can see this difference clearly. (pic).

2- Fractal

3- Other modeler - more bass and too dark.

Could we get ‘The Reveal’ for this one too pretty please! ;-)

my vote would be: amp, axe, other

thx!

I liked 1 and 2. Two sounded like it more lower mids, but I can't say I liked it more or less than 1. I didn't care for #3. It was muffled in comparison.

1) Lots of bite and percussive attack. Real amp

2) Slightly flatter and less open, not quite as much bite. Maybe Fractal.

3) Completely muffled and dead sounding. 90s Zoom pedal.

They got progressively darker. 1 sounded open and cutting. 2 sounded smooth. I didn’t like 3, which is, to me, the odd one out and most dissimilar. Couldn’t tell which is what.

Since Cliff hasn't posted the answer yet, I can still guess :D

My TIP is that there is not the AXE FX between those samples at all and,

  • no. 1 is the real amp
  • no. 2 ok, it's similar, but lacks clarity and the gain structure is sort of there ... not the AXE
  • no. 3 is completely off ... can't be the AXE, my guess is the L6HX

#1 dynamic, bright, natural sounding
clear - open
eq sounds transparent
overtones - sustained
overtones - fade out smoothly
even-order harmonics - with a tasteful sprinkle of odd harmonics

The following is in comparison to #1

#2 less dynamic, darker, still natural sounding,
clear - slightly less open
eq sounds slightly rolled off
overtones - slightly less sustained
overtones - fade out less smoothly
even-order harmonics - slightly fewer, less pronounced, odd harmonics

The following is in comparison to #1 or #2

#3 much less dynamic, much darker, sounds unnatural
muffled - no sense of openness
eq sounds heavily rolled off
overtones - less sustain
overtones - fade out less smoothly
harmonics - muffled and lack-luster

My guesses:

#1 - Amp - (Vox AC20 style?)
#2 - Fractal?
#3 - a low quality model

@FractalAudio be interesting to hear one of these where it's some proper chuggah-chuggah type stuff. Palm mute comparison would be interesting/funny/revealing, as this is one area where I think the differences between modellers becomes increasingly clear.

None of them are AxeFX, since one is the real amp and I'm guessing the Axe would have been almost indistinguishable from the real amp. All these 3 clips are very different from each other.

My guess is:
1. Brand L
2. Real Amp
3. Brand N

Though it is almost impossible to tell, when there is no real reference. But I believe the actual point is they are very different - not which one is which. ;)
