Wish The ugliest and filthiest and nastiest sounding fuzzes known to man

Wish list - a couple of really ugly nasty fuzzes that just sound awful (and awesome) and tear your head off.

Reference models:

  • Friedman Fuzz Fiend: with the RAGE switch held down this brings in an oscillator that fights against your guitar to create huge walls of noise
  • Subdecay Harmonic AntAgonizer: Similar to the Fuzz Fiend, it has an oscillator function that can be triggered by a built in envelope
  • Gamechanger Audio Plasma Coil: This thing is just brutal.

+1 on the Plasma Coil, fun stuff.

Not sure how close you could come with straight up rectification and getting though.

There are some great Fuzz presets in the factory banks. Here is a list of preset and scenes containing "fuzz" for you to explore.
Some of these may be irrelevant, but some are surely awesome. In fact, I think you'll have more fun with this list than you would with a few such real pedals.

Fuzzfaceless Mk1 is the 'nastiest' fuzz I've heard but haven't been able to replicate in the Axe III. First fuzz that made me go "WOW", I gotta have it!! It's likely a derivative of the fuzzface but having parameters or controls to achieve these tones in the Axe/FM would be a great addition. I would gladly eat crow if they're already in there. Those are very cool, I went through them last night before posting actually. The sort of thing I am after is this:

Starts off with a saturated+fuzz lead line. Then goes into a rhythm part where I hit the Friedman Fuzz Fiend RAGE switch half way through the sustained chords whilst at the same time slightly turning down my volume on the guitar so that the oscillator has a chance to cut through.

You have a collection of great oscillators in the Axe-Fx that can be put to use for exactly this sort of thing.

Half (or more) of the coolness of the Gamechanger plasma pedal/plasma pedal is seeing the “lightening” in the tube so that part would be hard to model lol

Yeah a tutorial on how to get a sort of interactive fuzz+oscillator wall of sound type of thing where you can nicely blend between the two... that'd be right up my alley!
Think about it: what does "oscillation" mean? It means there's a feedback loop inside of the drive circuit that causes the signal to regenerate and add to itself.

Can you think of a simple way to do this in the Axe-Fx? The send and return blocks maybe?

Here's a 30 second hot take:

The filter block is there to control some of the hyteresis that you'll get doing this. You want to be really really gentle with the return block level.

I tied the return block level to the envelope filter so it'd increase the level as the signal and In 1 fell off:

It'll squeal with too much signal. But I've had Devi Ever fuzzes that do exactly like that as their feedback loops aren't well-tamed. You can add some dynamicism to the filter block to help with this or try and ADSR on the return level.

There's so many ways to experiment here it's a little ridiculous. Look at it as a challenge to build your sound and it's a fun game of exploration and discovery.

Other things to try:

  • feed a synth block into the drive block in paralle with your guitar signal;
  • stack drive blocks;
  • use the crossover block to feed two parallel drive blocks different high and low frequency content and then blend them back together;
  • add more controllers to the parameters in the drive block so they vary with your playing -- try the extreme ends of settings here.

Thanks for saving me money on new fuzzes. This is gold.
