The Noise Reduction Block

I'm experimenting with another stereo effects device in the effects loop of the Axefx 2. This device makes a little extra hiss or noise that the main noise reduction function in the Axefx 2 doesn't seem to remove. Is the additional noise block of the axefx there for reducing hiss from an external device plugged in? Would you place it right after the effect loop block in the signal chain?

Thanks!

Try a gate/exp block immediately after FX Loop block.

What type of effects do you plan to use this device for?

With distortion or other tone-altering effects, the gate may work best with sidechain = input 1. For delay or reverb you'd likely want to keep sidechain at default (block input).

Yep. I just tried it right after the fx block. It worked.

Using a Lexcion rack processor for only nonlinear/reverse reverb. Adds a little "bizarre-ness" to everything!

Right. The input noise gate works great for everything inside of the Axefx 2, but it doesn't seem to remove hiss from an external stereo effect patched into the effect loop.
that's because it's an INPUT noise gate. it gates noise from the input - your guitar. it wouldn't affect anything after the input, like the effects loop.

Also for time-based effects, you'd probably want to route the dry signal parallel to FXL/gate and set the Lexicon for 100% mix. Then you're not applying another gate to the dry signal, and can try various settings (like maybe longer attack time) without altering the dry attack.

Is there a way to put a modifier on the input noise gate that will change with a scene? For example, clean tones don't require much, dirty tones require a bit, and highly overdriven tones require more, all within the same preset.

Can this also be done with the input trim of an amp, to go from slightly gritty in one scene to just plain dirty in another?

Check out what scene controllers can do for you:

Chris: if the input noise gate is just for the guitar, why does it work so well with removing sim amp hiss and noise from the Axefx's amp blocks?

The amp blocks just amplify whatever noise reaches them. If you mute the input signal they'll be completely silent, unlike external gear that generates noise on its own.

Because the noise is being amplified by the amp block. The noise is always there. I don't change my gate settings between clean and distortion except with specific setups. It's the same noise source. As bakerman said, if you mute the input (or remove the guitar), the noise goes away... because the guitar is producing the noise.

Many people try to use the input gate to solve feedback noise. But in any situation, if the noise is as loud as the sound you want to hear, a gate will do nothing except get rid of both signals. Gates do not seek out "noise." They simply act on signal level and can't differentiate between a good note or a buzz.
