The John Nathan Cordy Appreciation Thread

As I understand this conversation, you're just going to rant on someone for no good reason. That's okay, just know that John has done so much for this community and that's what this thread is appreciating. Hope that's okay for you. Cheers
The “ no good reason “ is his review content is very poor, uninformed or factually incorrect. The video example I gave is beyond stupid. I think this qualifies as “good reason “.

Well, it may be true that JNC is a qualified guitarist, but has difficulty making his point verbally, or engaging in normal conversation. TBH, it's not my place nor choice to judge any of that. My appreciation thread was designed to draw listeners to his playing ability. For those who think they know more musically, or that they're smarter than the next person, check your ego, please. There is nothing more irritating than listen to ppl say a guy is clueless but can't say why themselves.

My concern is that a person is valued for their teaching ability, not their ability to bluff their way through life...
I’ve said why all along, in most comments and an example video. I said he plays well .

No, but a little bit of misinformation goes a long way.

I did really enjoy his lesson on legato - I found that really useful.
I think if you review equipment and publish it on a public platform you should make sure the factual information is correct. Yes share an opinion but that’s not what I am complaining about.
He is on a par with anything for a dollar Darrell .
This garbage should be on the shopping channel.

Who are your preferred Geartubers?

Leon is fair and yes paid but he demonstrates the gear well give you factually correct information and doesn’t give a conclusion. Mike from big hairy guitars is the same . Pete Thorn is a bit shopping channel but the demo and information is there. Even Henning is going to be ok if you know the deal and he is pretty brutal if something is crap.

Yeah I subscribe to all of their channels. I also like JNC, I guess that's just where we differ then.

I don't think so.

You can't be ignorant about how to use guitar gear and get as good tone as he does.

Where I see your point a bit is in (some) of his attempts to get into the technical aspects, although tbf he usually states up front that these are only his opinions and that he is not especially technically minded. He still gives a run through of the operation of the gear though, and that I often find useful when it comes to dialling things in on my own gear.

Regarding the specific video you linked to where he talks about pedals being overpriced, there were a lot of comments from ppl with some connection to pedal building expressing their disagreement/disappointment. I watched it, commented on it, left it at that. It's not as if you can accuse him of avoiding contentious issues, and he has recently made a tonne of videos about how good analog gear is (a lot of it just about stuff he's had for years); if he's just a "Shill" why would he do that?

If there's one thing he's slightly guilty of that I don't like it's the clickbait titles, but then he is monetising his videos, and makes no secret of that either.

I also respect him for speaking out occasionally about other issues, which he will throw in because he feels the need to say them. A lot of others won't risk doing that.
Funny thing is that he started his channel using these titles as a mockery of other channels eg. You NEED this thing, and with that he basically broke all the YouTuber rules to have a successful channel. People like Tom Quayle said his channel is a breath of fresh air.

Now the title thing just stuck and probably benefits his channel :)

The thing that I've always appreciated about John is that he is one of the few transparent and honest YouTubers, and his followers know this.

Here is an interesting video.

The trouble is he’s clueless. He can’t recognise the difference between cynical crap polished up to look good and a flawed bargain that is fundamentally solid. This is super important when you are looking at budget options.

JHS pedal aside, are there other examples of this?

All his gear reviews are full of factual inaccuracies and infantile observations.
Come on, that is a huge exaggeration. We get it, you find fault in his approach, but "infantile"? That just sounds like a word you use because you've tried it on someone before. I'm not sure why you're on this thread telling everyone that likes him that he's no good. I'm actually laughing now at the pointlessness of this discussion 🤣

I do like your avatar though, eagles are cool 😎

You’re not going to learn anything useful about gear from him.

Could be Andy Wood doing a prank on him? What are the chances?

Do you want to elaborate because I’m happy to go in to detail on any review he has done. I am a full time guitar technician of 35 years experience what’s your opinion based on?
He's made comparisons between different modellers. He's presented certain amp sims and given his view on them. I've certainly learned something from that. I don't think he knows much about guitars from a technical standpoint (like for example he'll talk about "fretwork", if I recall, when there's hardly any) but.. someone's view as a player can be valuable too, no?
