My good old chum Tony popped over yesterday and brought from his "warehouse" some of his pedals for me to have a listen to as I was having a blistering GAS crisis yesterday morning.
We plugged the following into the front end of the FX8
OCD
Mini Tubescreamer
Mini Keeley Red Dirt
Xotic RC Clean Booster SH
Timmy
Orange Burst
Fuzz Factory
Rat (original)
Mojo Hand FX Rook
Wampler Tumnus
After about 2 hours of listening to them and tweaking etc we decided it was a toss up between the Orange Burst and the Fuzz Factory. A pedal that's about £20 vs a pedal £280.
Then just for fun we tried the BB Preamp FX Block in the FX8.
Winner ? BB Preamp FX Block !!!
the test wasn't to find what sounds closest to a klon or a signature tone, just what sounds great to our ears. It could be high gain or low gain etc it didn't matter- it just had to sound great.
All used on a Mark v clean channel.
I then tried this morning
Tumnus
Red Dirt
Tubescreamer
RC Clean Booster SH
Timmy
... as an overdrive in the crunch channel. The Tubescreamer pedal was best to my ears in this configuration although i have got within a "gnats chuff" of that particular tone with the 808 drive block and then got an equally good but different sound using the BB Preamp block we used in the first round of testing.
So ... do I bin my pedals now and just use the fx8 or continue as I am.
Decisions .....
