Testosterone Replacement Therapy - What dose does your doc prescribe?

What, in mg's per week, is your doctor prescribing you? I have heard all kinds of ranges and injecting twice a week to some that do every 2 weeks.

I'd just point out that your question is probably inappropriate to be asking on a guitar equipment forum. Doses vary widely (as you mention) depending on the levels, and the cause of the deficiency. We're not talking about using it as a gym junkie or for body building - I'm referring to its use as a replacement therapy.

As a medico myself, I wouldn't be responding to your question with specific dosages. Check with your specialist endocrinologist if you're concerned.

silly me I thought a new AXIII or FM3 would fix it... If I had either I'm sure I'd up my levels..

I recommend copious amounts of 80's action flicks. Nothing stirs up the testosterone then seeing over muscled one man armies battle hordes of alien/commie/warlord/druglord mooks with inexhaustible supplies of puns and one liners. Failing that get a full Marshall stack, crank everything to 10, stand in front of it (with earplugs of course, cause safety first) and hit that power chord. If you're feeling really adventurous stick an overdrive in front of the amp.

I've had some success taking a more natural approach with a Ginseng Complex supplement, DHEA and Rhodiola Rosea. While they work to a certain extent, I had been curious about supplements like M-Drive so I got some and started this week. Noticeable energy, alertness and motivation (wanting to do stuff) increase.

Testosterone supplements don't do the job. You'd need a jab of pharmaceutical grade testosterone from your GP. The doses vary from GP to the next, ranging from 100mg to 200mg, 200 probably too much for the job that needs to be done.

FYI, the steroids guys, they take at least 500mg a week. 😉

Simply offering my experience using supplements as an alternative to having something injected into my body that has some potentially serious side-effects and complications. Each person needs to determine what is right for them. It's just not worth the risk for me, especially since these alternatives have provided the results I was looking for.

Hardly a risk getting a pharmaceutical grade testosterone from your GP. Millions of men worldwide do this weekly.

I have to say I find it interesting that people will avoid "having something injected into my body that has some potentially serious side-effects and complications."

Yet they will happily ingest Ginseng Complex supplement, DHEA and Rhodiola Rosea - do you even know what those actually are? Or what effects they have? You're still putting them into your body - just via the oral route rather than injection. Makes no difference apart from dosage and speed of absorption. And as for that M-Plan nonsense - check out the Web site: it's full of pseudoscientific rubbish, and weasel words like "supports testosterone". What does that mean? Answer - nothing.

If somebody actually needs testosterone replacement for falling natural levels (as happens to most men as we age), then pharma grade, pure hormone by injection is what is needed. And dosage is determined by each individual patient's needs and existing levels. And anything you take orally in the way of "testosterone supplements" is useless - most of it is broken down in the liver BEFORE it even gets into the general circulation. Known as the "first pass principle", most of the blood that flows from the bowel (including the stomach, intestines both small and large) goes to the liver FIRST (via the portal vein), where liver metabolism breaks down most of the molecules that go through. That's why dosage of drugs is so carefully calculated for oral medications - depending on the drug, different proportions are neutralized by the first pass principle.

(/end of rant)

Alternative remedies can get you into trouble if you are not careful. Many natural and herbal supplements are not evaluated or regulated by the FDA. Some can be quite potent, have strong side effects of their own, and can interact negatively with other medications you may be taking. Often there's no guarantee of the content or potency of what you buy. Pharmaceuticals are not always the answer, but at least there you know what you are getting and it's effects and interactions both positive and negative are tested and documented. Don't assume something is safe just because it's herbal or natural. Black Mamba venom is "all natural." Do your homework and buy products from trusted sources that are independent lab tested and verified.

Not looking for an argument here but I guess it's to be expected, no one is really entitled to an opinion anymore.
I do know what I'm putting in my body and I'm sure there are countless men, and women, who receive regular Testosterone injections/treatments without any issues. I'm also not suggesting they're inherently dangerous or ill-advised. I simply choose not to go the pharmaceutical route at this point due to the results I've had with the supplements. Everyone needs to do what they feel is best for them. I'll continue to do what I believe is best for me, a doctor commenting in a guitar forum isn't going to sway me one way or the other.

Not looking for arguments here either. But surely some logic has to play a part? Yes, everyone is entitled to an opinion. But the illogicality of someone not having proper pharmaceuticals due to the perception of risks but happy to take oral supplements of who-knows-what, that hasn't been scientifically tested, not regulated by the TGA or the FDA, and without any evidence to back up some outlandish claims (like "supports testosterone" or "boosts immunity") is not logical at all?

I've had patients who are on medically-prescribed anticoagulants but who ran into big trouble (one had a cerebral bleed) because they also took St John's Wort which was "harmless because it is only a supplement". St John's Wort has powerful anticoagulant properties, so the patients anticoag control got so way out of whack that one had a cerebral bleed and a stroke. Totally preventable. The point being that supplements and alternative "natural" therapies can be way more dangerous than proper pharmaceuticals. Let's face it - the stuff you get at Chemist Warehouse doesn't even have to go through ANY clinical trials or peer-reviewed testing at all. None, zero, zip, zilch. Yet pharmaceuticals are tested to the nth degree, and most side effects and complications are well known and documented.

OK - not the time or place to carry on an argument or debate about this any more, so I'll butt out. Might go and play some guitar as alternative therapy... ;)

why is that needed?
thanks

Because I'm curious to see what other people are being prescribed in dose and frequency. Folks I have talked to, there is a wide variety of protocol. Lots of doctors that do not know much about it and it shows in their prescription.
