Is it possible to have a swell patch that swells without using an expression pedal? Also be able to set the speed at which it swells?
Yes. Use the VOL/PAN block, select the Auto-Swell type, and set the params as desired.
Otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it.
Always the good old fashioned way of just turning your guitar volume pot too......
glad you got this thread, learning a new song for the group that has swells. I am gonna try this too.

Volume swells work best when the volume pedal is placed after the amp and before time based effects, such as delays and reverbs. That way the tone is consistent throughout the swells.
Matter of personal opinion. I like it at the front and it’s effect on gain
It’s not just the same. Rolling off the volume pot decreases gain, and ultimately changes tone.

I agree. For swells this is the best solution. But If you want it to control gain you placed it before amp and drive. I don't use it that way though. I also prefer using a pedal instead of the volume knob for swells.
Auto swell can be nice too sometimes but I still prefer a foot pedal. It's hard to exactly dial in auto swell and is very dependent of the speed that you play. Your foot gives you more control.
