Yes it works great in front of the AX3.
In general the AX3 takes pedals very well.
It works and sounds great. I use it to offload cpu on the fm9

I don't see much need for the Sunset though since most of the overdrives it models are already in the Axe-Fx, except the Klon.
I have a Strymon Riverside and can vouch that it works well in front of my FM3. I would love to see something like that modeled in the Axe-Fx, not the pedal specifically but a "generic" tube preamp type boost/overdrive/distortion. Though to be fair you could just do most of that stuff in the amp block.
