Steve Vai's David Lee Roth-era Jose Arredondo-modded Marshall Super Lead

Update - I had a quick crack at this based on the steps Dave Friedman outlines in Pete's vid. 1959SLP Jump, Sat switch on (ideal), input trim 3, MV dialled back to 7, using a greenback IR. Further tweaking would get you a lot closer but here's a quick and sloppy rip at some DLR.

I plugged those settings into my Plexi preset, and wow, that really is THE sound. Thanks for the tip!

The saturation switch in the amp block engages clipping diodes (Zeners IIRC) which is the crucial part of the José mod. We can essentially create our own custom amps in the Axe-Fx by starting with a core model and playing around with the advanced parameters.

I imagine there were some other component tweaks from amp to amp, but I see no reason we couldn't get close to this in the Axe.

I just had a thought. Instead of raising input trim, you could have an amp block with the tube pre in front of the SLP amp block. I shall try that when I'm back with my III

There's a few ways of getting there, it just depends what you prefer

True, but if we are going for authenticity, we should boost the SLP with a tube rather than a digital level lift. I am sure the difference will be minimal.

Little vid inspired by this.

@Smittefar I wonder if the tube driver would work too?

Brilliant! Thanks - interesting your point on the brightness, I was playing out at the end of the 80s - we weren’t aware of it, but we sounded so much brighter than guitar sounds now, explains the vague ringing I still have in my ears!

I thought about the same thing. It works really great with the Tube Pre though. I had a go at it this afternoon. It sounds glorious. I will make a video in a few hours

@unix-guy, I am not sure I quite understand. Input trim is a pure level lift, no emulation there. It is as clean as any analog boost could only dream to be.

My point was only half serious... But everything in the Fractal is digital. ;)

The Input Trim is controlling the (virtual) signal level into the amp and that signal is a modeled analog signal.

Anyway, I agree with your intent, I think, which is to add more tube-y clipping up front rather than just a larger "clean" boost of incoming signal.

By the way, I played with this last night and taking the Input Trim up to 3 is ridiculously fun... Had to back of the Input Drive(s) and lower MV :)

Here's my take on implementing the mods mentioned by Friedman in the AxeFX III - This is definitely all in on the eighties - If only I could really play like that

Preset is attached - In cab block channel B, I put in some factory Black back IRs. I did not tune them much though.
