Solutions for using Axe-Fx as an in the room amp?

I saw a bunch of pictures in the rig thread of people with what looked like floor monitors, I assume this is to use the axe fx as a regular amp in the room with them?

obvious concern bein with the cab and mic emulation and such being neutral enough. I assume any old PA type solution would work?

are there any particularly good/popular models for doing this? I think I’d like a setup like this as well so I can get at least a 12” speaker (or pair to run stereo) to hear my guitar models out of rather than only my studio monitors.

thanks!

Just plug into traditional guitar cabinets (I use a matrix gt1000fx for adding electrons amplitude) and turn up the volume.

Matrix runs its knobs at about 2:30 on the clockface (and the Axe3 about 11 o’clock on the FRFR output two; and 9 o’clock for output one on Axe3 out to the matrix.)

Amp in the room all day long 24 x 7 x 365

I run both FRFR and traditional cabs, all in Quadereo 😜

I use a hybrid setup. Matrix Gt1000fx power amp into a regular guitar cabinet (no cab block) using output3 and also output 1into FRFR speakers or my studio monitors (with cab block) depending on situations. I rarely have both on at the same time at home. Pre-covid I always gigged monitoring myself through the guitar cabinet on stage, FRFR sound going to the house/PA.

For larger venues, occasionally I would use in-ear monitors, or if the tour/venue/gig required it. Or have the FRFR sound pumped through the front wedges on stage. Usually House of Blues sized venues and larger.

Best of both worlds in my opinion.

A power amp with traditional cab configuration seems to give most players more of the feel of a physical guitar amp in a room. I used to do this from time to time but anymore I just turn up my monitors to get the feel of the air 'moving'. I've been messing around with IRs for awhile and have found that blending IRs to get a mix of different speaker sounds helps the overall tone and feel for me. The mixes I prefer have IRs of the Cap, Cone, Room and Cabinet Back positions.

There's a lot of threads on this already - I would peruse them and then see if anyone has answered questions you may have.

I did look through the first couple pages but didn't see any on this. Not trying to muck the forum up with redundant posts.

And I take it FRFR refers to the power amp/cab/mic/position IR? so "no cab block" would mean just bypassing this IR and going amp head model > real life cab and just using that cab rather than a cab model? I'd prefer being able to use "different cabs" models through a speaker, i assume that would be using FRFR through a PA amp/speaker?

Full Range Flat Response.

That is reference to the speaker's ability to produce a flat-ish (there's not any literally FRFR product I'm aware of) EQ across full frequency range.

I feel like everyone else is answering a slightly different question than you're asking.

Yeah, the floor monitor looking speakers are so they can hear it while playing in the room with them in a way that get louder and projects further than studio monitors. You can also use them at band practices, or even small shows.

The key with most is getting something FRFR (full range, flat response), so it's a pretty generic flat sound itself and the Axe can do all the tone shaping with it's amp and cab modelling.

Most PA speakers are pretty full range and flat, and should work decently. Some floor monitors aren't so flat, they accentuate the vocal ranges to make it easier to hear yourself singing. So just be aware of that.

Popular models are Atomic CLR, Xitone wedges, Lne6 power cabs, Yamaha DXR 10 or 12 PA speakers (the 10" is actually enough for guitar by most accounts), etc.

no

it’s a traditional full range flat response speaker 🔈 like in a decent stereo or PA. Studio monitors for example.

Guitar speakers and guitar cabinets are much more restricted in their frequency range.

Monitoring yourself at a gig is perhaps a slightly different topic. Is that the heart of your question?

The confusion is some people talk about wanting the "amp in the room" sound. The Axe FX produces the sound of a mic'd amp setup, not a raw speaker cabinet in the room. The way the high end drops off, fills up the room, or the sound travels over distance are a bit different. So lots of people use power amps into real guitar cabs if there's something about that "amp in the room" feel they're missing. Half the replies were answering that question instead of just explaining the normal FRFR use you asked about ;)

not quite the way I see it

the axe certainly can make “raw” amp tones, and with a neutral(SS) amplifier into a traditional cab - it sounds pretty much as good or better than the “real” thing depending upon what you desire

of course you can do the entire signal path as well, emulating the mic and cab as wished

great tool set and best MI gear purchase ever

Right. What I meant to say was the signal coming out of headphones or a FRFR is of a full Mic'd tone. An some people don't like that and prefer a more "amp in the room" type sound, which can be done by running through a real guitar cab instead of an FRFR.

And that I don't think that specific "amp in the room" sound was what OP was after, just learning in general what the ways are to get it up to volume in a room. Be that with FRFRs, or a SS power amp and a guitar cab, or a tube power amp and guitar cab.

I use this:

It gets loud enough to play small/medium gigs, or to act as my stage monitor at a big gig. Stereo chorus/flange/phase/rotary sound amazing through it....

JBL SRX812p are fantastic ! I have 3 of them, used for guitar and vocal monitors.

Not the most popular in the guitar modeler scene, but get rave reviews for general monitors or pa speakers.

I'm always surprised I don't see them more here, fractal used to us use the old model as their demo speakers I believe.

If you want amp in the room, you need:

FRFR.

Neutral IRs that do not add microphone characteristics.

To use the CAB block high and low cuts to dramatically reduce the EQ spectrum to the true range you’d experience in front of the amp.

Add in Farfield and Room IRs in the CAB block to create the ambiance between you and the speaker a normal IR does not possess.

What type of cab and speaker do you use onstage? Are you making any adjustments to the signal chain going to your cab versus what’s going to FOH?
