I'd like to know if it's possible to slave the preamp section of one amp into the poweramp section of another amp, a la Metallica (Mk IV into a Marshall)?

You can't separate preamp from power amp in the AxeFx.

Someone in another thread reported mixed results by using 2 amps: disable power amp simulation in the first (by setting sag to 0) and setting up the second with neutral preamp settings so that you effectively have amp1 preamp into amp2 power-amp.

Would changing the tonestack produce a similar result?
Choose a Marshall Pre but using the tonestack from a USA Lead 2. Just a guess...

if we're talking about the axefx, don't all the amps share the same "power amp" emulation? as mentioned above, swapping the tonestack seems to be the closest effect.
