Red Wire Cab Marshall Cab "Formula" Suggestions

Hey mixers,

The online mixIR will now spit out files in WAV and Axe-Fx sysex formats. Thanks to AlbertA for generously contributing his sysex conversion code.

Hi Mike
just did a mix of two caps and I'm not sure wether the converter on your site works or not bcause if I use the sysex file which I got from your site , the mix is at least 6 db louder and much more treble. When I download the Wav file and convert it with AlbertA's tool on my computer every thing looks fine and the file is as loud as all the others Redwirez I've got on my computer

Well, it certainly is possible that it doesn't work right. I don't have an Axe-Fx to test with. I looked at the frequency plot and the converted IRs should not have more treble. It may sound like it if it's 6db louder, though. I don't do any normalization before the conversion, like AlbertA's converter, so I'll have to see what level he normalizes to and replicate that.

Ok. I tried normalizing before converting and now the online converter produces files identical to AlbertA's converter. Thanks for the heads-up.

I just went through the couple of pages and created the mix of each cab that Scott created (still haven't tried them out but I've already got them ready to load'em up!!!)... any way we can get all the mixes setup on the first post the way GM Arts has it setup?

Example:

(1) Scotts_902_Vintage_Marshall.txt
Marshall1960A-G12Ms-R121-CapEdgeOffAxis-2in.wav,0.50
Basketweave-G12Ls-421-Cone-3in.wav,0.50

I've been using this 4x12 mix for my FRFR patches:

Marshall1960A-G12Ms\Neumann U87\Marshall1960A-G12Ms-U87-CapEdge-2in.wav,0.5367
Marshall1960B-V30s\TC30-Ref-FarFields\Marshall1960B-V30s-TC30-OffAxis-2m.wav,0.463
Marshall1960A-G12Ms\Ambient Mics\Marshall1960A-G12Ms-KM84-BackCab-1in.wav, 0.0003

I remove a lot of ~4.1KHz -> 4.2KHz in a fairly narrow notch and further shape the ends with a PEQ. The ambience mic is really low in the mix but does add 'woof' and dimension...but I might add in a bit more ambience level and play around further with back placement, since, after a few of gigs, I've got a better take on how things translate between my home reference and live environments.

I mixed for, and use this cab, at "rock band" levels for live stage use; not for bedroom/moderate/ear phone levels, and use the Global EQ to fix differences in response between venues and the level you finally settle into once the band starts playing.

Here are some cab recipes based on Scott's "V7" recipes from this thread

Thanks! I really love this feature.
IMHO AlbertA deserves a live-time subscription on all the (new) Redwirez cabs!

here's my favorite IR of the basketweave G12H30s (I threw in the back of cab from Scott's formula)

BasketweaveG12H30s-C414-CapEdge-0_5in.wav,0.486
BasketweaveG12H30s-R121-CapEdge-1in.wav,0.486
BasketweaveG12H30s-TC30-Back-0in.wav,0.028

I've got this on a mesa rectifier patch w/ another cab formula and it sounds killer!!

Yeah he does!

I tried the R121/SM57 mix again, much like Scott is using (I think Pete Thorn spawned the cap edge 2" thinking, but it could be the other way around). Anyhow, I tried them tonight in practice and I just couldn't get with them. The SM57 adds a fizzy comb filter effect to my 4x12s that bugs me. I don't get that with just the R121. I guess my ear must hear it differently because I know the SM57 is a popular mic but man, that recipe really adds a harshness particularly with the V30. I guess it will make it cut differently but it doesn't sound as nice to my ear. It makes me feel like I've got the hearing problem since it's such a popular mix here (and at TGP).

AFAIK Scott is down to just 57's now, for the most part.

Are you running stereo out, summed or copy L>R?
Does the comb effect also occur when using just a single SM57?
Did you use a stereo cab, or two separate cabs?
When using a stereo cab or two parallel cabs, you should pan the IRs L/R.

P.S 1. A few cab/SM57 combinations don't work for me. For example, the Orange sounds terrible (to me).
P.S 2. If it's too bright, try CapEdgeOffAxis 0" or Cone 1" instead.

I am using 1" cap edge SM57 for every speaker (almost) and combining different speakers with that IR if I do, but not always. Following Pete Thorn's recipe.

Good questions from Yek - all would need to be known to breakdown what's happening.
