Recording software question

Unless you have the isolated stems like the ones from the Guitar Hero/Rock Band series or the ones included in special editions of some albums (Dream Theater's Black Clouds & Silver Linings comes to mind) it's almost impossible to successfully isolate tracks from a CD.

Really is just a general misconception that there's some 'magical' software that does it, but such thing doesn't exist. On the other hand, tho... there are programs like Riffstation that (I think) use some sort of phase cancellation to either isolate some frequencies or exclude them from the mix. You can achieve different results with more or less artifacts depending of the density of the mix itself, but then again, it's absolutely far from perfect.

Also, if you happen to find songs with a 5.1 mix you can isolate some parts, but that's another process entirely as you need to know how to decode DTS audio formats and separate them into individual tracks.
