So I just got a VP4 and it’s been great. I primarily play bass but also dabble in guitar, so I’ve been experimenting with the drive blocks in the VP4 feeding into my Mesa mk iii blue stripe. It sounds good, but I started getting output clip warnings when using the integrated preamp drive modal.
Based on my research, the real integrated pre can get output levels as high as +19dBU, while the max output of the vp4 is +16dBU according to the wiki, so I think it makes sense that it clips if I dime the level knob? Is this just a downside of working in the digital realm that I wouldn’t be able to get the full boost as compared to using an analog pedal? I think for most pedals I should be ok, but I know the integrated pre can get a pretty hot level coming out.
I only mess around with guitar at home for the most part while playing bass in bands, so I’m not concerned if this is just what it is. Just trying to understand the interactions between VP4 vs the gear it’s modeling with regard to output levels so I can get proper gain staging.
