Preset Default

I have posted this question to the Facebook page and emailed support, however so far no one has been able to come up with a solution. Whenever I restart my FXIII, I always get returned to the 000 Preset, never to the one I was last using when I shut down the unit. I am told the unit should return to the last preset in use, but mine does not do that. It always returns to preset 000 (59 Bassguy). Yes, I am on the latest production firmware 10.02. My unit is only about a month old. The only things plugged into my unit are my Fender Stratocaster guitar and Yamaha HS7 monitors, and the USB is plugged into my totally updated Windows 10 machine running the very latest version of AXE Edit. I am told there is NO setting that can correct this or set a "default" preset on start. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Isn't there a setting to always go to "Last Preset"? I sort of remember that from 11 years ago!
Not according to support: Hi Jeffrey,

It isn't possible to set a desired startup preset. The Axe-Fx III does not have this feature.
As you mention, however, the unit should at least remember which preset was selected when you powered down.

Some things that might interfere with this include MIDI, an external foot controller, and more.

Probably a bad, missing, or loose battery:

To my surprise... when I opened the Fx III, there was no battery installed !! :oops:o_O

Although not happy about the whole situation, with a fresh battery on it, at least the unit seems to be working and holding the parameters. Yahoo..

Also, I noticed that when I shut the unit down and power it up again, the unit keeps the last patch on start up, that was not happening before. (yeah, I didn't know this behaviour since I am new with the unit - only had ~4 hours of use)

So how do you open the case? Just take the screws out from the top plate? What type of battery is it? Also, I created a looper preset and it remembers that. Would it do that if the battery was missing or loose? Support did not even suggest that as a possibility.

I've not taken mine apart but I would guess the top plate screws are the place to start. The battery is a CR2032. I don't think the battery has anything to do with storing presets, just some global settings and the like, though I may be wrong.

You might right... Couldn't remember if it effects preset saving or not.
I sent an email to Fractal support re: missing or loose battery. I'll see what they say, before I do something that might void my warranty. I have a feeling the battery is not the problem, as everything else seems fine. I was an IT Specialist in the Federal Govt for 20+ years, and I know how computers work. Usually batteries work at a very low level, like keeping the system time, and holding the BIOS in memory, but if there was no battery in the AXE, I think a lot more stuff would be evidencing itself. Maybe I should just try reloading the firmware, although I upgraded the firmware when I got the unit, and it has always gone back to the first preset on both firmware 9.0 and 10.0 Very weird problem. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Global settings are not saved when battery is failed or absent.

You can test it simply by changing a global setting then cycling power. Check if the setting has reverted.

Or feel free to wait for support...

But as you can see from an earlier post, someone had the same issue and the battery was the cause.

Thanks for the recommendation. This morning I tried to set a different parameter in global settings, specifically Power Amp Modeling to OFF. I did so, and rebooted the unit. The setting had returned on ON. I have emailed Fractal Support and Sales. I mentioned that it was suggested the battery may be dead or missing. I am awaiting their response.

This morning Matt from Fractal Audio called me and we discussed the issue. He felt that the battery was the problem, so Fractal Audio is sending me a new battery. When I receive it, they offered to walk me through the installation of it, and to also check on the existing battery and see if it is seated properly. Matt was very helpful and I thank him and Fractal for looking into this. I'll let everyone know how this turns out, once the battery is replaced.
