I think the bright tone was personal prefrence. The different character of the amps is amazing. I have heard/owned most modeling processors and amps and I have never heard such distinctions and detail in any other unit. Most seem to carry a certain flavor to all their models and don't have near the detail ..IMO :)
 
I was stunned when I listened to Van Halen I raw original multitrack masters. Placement in the mix (and mastering) takes a tone which on its own is almost seemed unlistenably bright (and almost boring) and makes it into what we all know and love.

I have read more than once that the producers and engineers have more to do with the way a band sounds than the band itsself... Very apparent in todays pop and country scene ...
