PETE THORN AXE-FX II PRESETS AND CAB IR!

Is it just me or are these patches on the harsh fizzy side? I loaded them using Fractal-Bot and made sure I was using Pete's IR but they seem really bright to me. Probably just me as everyone else seems to be digging them.

Depending on what your using to monitor with, Yes they are on the bright side but that really is the way they are supposed to sound. If you have ever plugged into a 100 watt plexi and dimed all the controls that's pretty much what you get only at ear bleeding levels. You may have to make small adjustments to accommodate your guitar and monitoring system as any preset will not translate in the same way if different gear is being used.

Not a Marshall guy but I just loaded to try out.

These patches have so much sizzle I feel like I am frying bacon.

Not even sure where to start ... maybe with a BLT.

did you load his IR? it makes quite a difference

Yes I did.

I am not going to spend much time on it.

By the time I get done with it will be a different preset.

I gravitate more toward smoothness and less to bacon crackle.

The overdrive tones I like are probably more fit for a Porn soundtrack than a hard rock show :lol

I think it's more of a context issue, yes it sounds bright, sizzlely on it's own ha... is that even a word :? but put it in a mix with all of the other instruments and it fits. Eddies tone on the first two albums is the sound of warm bacon crackling. Add the other instruments and you get a sound that has been sought after by millions of guitar players. Is it for everyone...nope!

Yep -- everything changes when you play a preset live with a band!

what might sound like crap on its own sounds golden in the mix.

Completely agree.

I played with some guys that setup every year in the camp ground that I work at and I used these presets in a few improvised tunes. They worked really good considering how bright they are cut like a very sharp knife. The other two guitar players and the key board player all agreed that they sounded really good.

Thanks.
This worked until the point 8, I didn`t get no question. It only stopped at the end of the it transfer. When I tried one more time it says, error because the axe was in a manually firmware update mode!?

I'm getting this error as well, patch is OK its the IR that sems to be the problem, any ideas anyone?

that's puzzling..
i just went through my steps again and had no issues.
once you have browsed for Pete's IR sysex file and click the green "begin" button, a small window will pop up titled "transmit one cabinet"
in the window there is a little box defaulted at 1 with up and down buttons on the right.
this allows you to select the user cab slots (for example, if you leave it at 1, it will overwrite what ever IR you have in user cab slot 1)
click on the number and a tick mark will appear on a small circle on the left of the number.
then click the "send" button.
it will then load the IR.
you won't see anything on the front panel just yet.
but if you choose a layout view, highlight the cab block for editing, scroll the type to the user slot # that you saved the IR, you should see Pete's cab.
hope this helps a little.

But the presets works as it should anyway for me. The IR placed itself correct automatically!? Had to switch the Axe on and off a few time so there is something strange with the axe. Love the presets though

yeah, that was the same for me, the SL68 patch just seemed overly bright/harsh so I'm not sure the IR is loading properly, maybe I'll wait for the new AE and try that

For those of you that find the presets to be "overly bright".. don't worry! That sizzling top end is exactly right for recording, and although it may sound bright or even harsh alone, in a mix it does sound like a million bucks!

All guitarist that haven't recorded much with their tone, has a tendency to make patches or tweak amps a little bit on the dark side, because it sounds good on its own. In a mix, or together with a band, it's a whole different beast.

Short and sweet: Don't worry about that unfamiliar top end that seems to harsh.. it really isn't! It is exactly what it should sound like, unless you wanna get stuck at the bottom of the mix with a blanket over your sound. Get your ears used to that sort of sound, 'cause that is what's gonna get you the golden ticket!

Just loaded these up - the first sounds off my guitar (EBMM Silhouette Special (bridge humbucker)) were Highway to Hell then Roxy Roller (lol we play it in my cover band) but they sound great. These patches are gonna cut through the jumble on stage and sound great. Thanks again Pete and Fractal for getting us these, its inspiring to say the least.

I had an issue with the IR file also not showing up in USER #1 slot. Tried reloading it a couple of times and it didn't work. Set the slot to USER#2 and it worked - weird!! I was using Fractal Bot.

Hi guys,

The tones are basically what you get when you mic a worn in greenback, just off the center- standard rock guitar practice. They really aren't bright, when compared to the real deal- they are the same, virtually :)

Like some have said, play them in a band with bass and cymbals sizzling away, and you'll find they sit just right.

This is what real Marshalls and celestions sound like! :)

I used the BE patch for recording the other day....works awesome!
For now this is my starting point for recording rocky tracks :)

I tried the patch at a live gig through a Matrix GT1000FX and a Q12....did not work at all!
I guess the FM-effect did its thing. it got painfully bright at high volumes.

Pete, thanks for this, what I think is a, awesome recording patch!

Ok, so I am testing out the Pete Thorn presets using his IR, however they sound REALLY thin. I am using a FBT FRFR setup but not having much luck with these presets. Tried Seth's and the work fine, but the Pete Thorn presets are really thin. Any suggestions?

Was an epiphany for me when I got my first JCM800 rig. I had a plexi rig before that and when I got the JCM800, it was so knarly I thought it was broken lol

But it sits in a live mix without hardly anything for post EQ

Hey Pete.
Did an entire gig with a clean twin preset and these two.
Didn't even used the clean preset that much. Used the SL with volume rolled off on the guitar most of the time.
Used a 4th preset. Just a copy of the BE with Sat on for more liquid leads.
With a Gibson and a CLR and was ready to go. Didn't touch a thing.
Could face any stage in the world with these.
They sound so punchy it's amazing.
Thanks once more.
Cheers.

Thanks for uploading these presets and IR I really like them a lot. They work great with the volume control...very usable presets/tones for use with a band. I've created a couple of sweet presets using your IR...love it!
