Overdrive/distortion : amp or pedal (drive block) ?

the same here. Playing covers it can be different, but for my own tones I prefer choosing and dialing the amp alone for clean or overdriven or high gain sounds.
I (almost) never used a distortion pedal in front of my real amps and thought it might change with the virtual drives and amps inside the AFx, but I prefer the pure amp
sound most of the time.
 
The thing with me always was, that first of all I'm a huge Fuzz fan and secondly, whenever I get the amount of gain out of an amp I'd like to have, it starts to sound too compressed, small and middy to my taste. By cleaning up an amp I find to get the 'bigness' back and then using a drive pedal in front I get the amount of gain I like.

...Or maybe I just read way too many interviews of how my childhood heroes from the 80s got their tones :shock: :lol: ...
