What difference is there using the send and return ? I understand the differences in a real amp, just confused as to the advantage using them in axe 3.

Page 131-132 of the manual covers the two blocks and their two primary use cases really well.

You can use any output block as send and any input block as return and put them in the grid where you want them.
When you take in 1 as the main input and out 1 as the main output, you have outs 2,3,4 free as sends and ins 2,3,4 as returns. (Don't forget to crank the output knobs on the front panel).
When you split and route the signal left/right you can use each for two pieces of gear.
