-60 on the III is the equivalent of -80 on the II or AX8
Maybe I'm hopelessly deft, but I don't get it. -60 dB on III cannot possibly be relative to 0 dB on II.

Yeah, but that's about standalone analog gear. We're talking about an effect block in a digital unit. When something is set to a negative value in dB, I expect it to be relative to 0 dB FS. I don't understand what it has to do with Axe-FX II, or some strange "gate input level"?
Suppose I never had an Axe-FX II. Comparison to it doesn't explain anything.
When I set it to -60 dB on Axe-FX III, what's the actual value in dB FS?
