NGD: 'Purple Reed Smith' takes my Axe experience to a new level

After years and years of drooling all over PRS's on the internet, I have finally bought myself a membership to the club! It took us 370 miles to get to this beauty, but it was worth every second and every penny.

Behold my newly acquired PRS Custom 24 10-top from 1992! This guitar was made before PRS moved to their bigger factory and the legend says these models sound better than the newer models, which where built with more aid from CNC machines... The only difference that can be observed objectively is the fact that this guitar still has the small heel. I don't know whether the hype is true, but the guitar sounds absolutely amazing and I couldn't be happier.

The 5 way pickup switch makes this a very versatile guitar and for me it's a killer combination with the Axe-FX. I know finally have the feeling that I can make whatever sound I want, only using these two pieces of equipement. My other guitars are pretty metal oriented and my only single coil guitar is pretty low budget, so the PRS really has its own place in my setup.

Just wanted to share this, as I am so happy!

The original smaller heeled guitars had dead spot issues on certain frets. The newer heel added mass, which changed the resonant frequency of the guitar, eliminating the dead spot issue. Also, the larger heel is faster and cheaper to manufacture.

I haven't experienced any dead spots on the neck so far. How could I check for them?

Wow. That is a super clean '92. Not even any wear in the chrome on the bridge. Usually you get a little brass show through on the low E string of the bridge where people palm mute.

Congrats man.

Very nice - congrats! Your excitement resonates nicely through your post

I have an SE Torero which is of course, not in anything like the same league as your new baby, but I played it live a couple of weeks ago - first time I've touched that particular guitar in months - and my god, it was lovely!

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments!

Play every note on every fret - if you die, you've found it.

I'm glad they have wifi in heaven, or I couldn't of made this post! After reading about dead spots I checked the guitar and it has indeed less sustain on the 12th fret on the G-string. Yesterday evening the problem seemed worse than when I plugged into the Axe this morning...

I'm going to try to live with it, as a lot of old guitars are prone to dead spots (SGs, Strats,...). I can play the high G on the B string where it keeps ringing, when I need it to. Lets just say it gives the guitar some personality and I need to work and bond with the instrument. And as a matter of fact: I lack more as a player, than the guitar lacks in sound...

Good god that is gorgeous.

Thanks mate! At first I really wasn't sure whether I'd like a purple guitar, as I always dreamt of a PRS in a more classic looking color like Amber Violin... But to be honest I'm really glad I bought the guitar, as it isn't the Custom 24 you see everyday.

That flame is killer. I've seen a zillion on eBay and that's a real winner. Anything pre-factory is prob a good investment. What's the neck profile?

Thanks, I'm really glad I made a good purchase. More than worth the 6 hour drive!

The guitar was advertised as having a Wide Thin neck. I haven't played many PRS's so I don't have first hand experience with the difference. That being said, the neck feels home for me. Does the neck profile change anything in value?

Amazing geetar!

My buddy had one of those pre-CNC ones on loner once and I found it played and sounded much better then the Navarro one I have, which I paid 2700$ for in 2005!

Congratulations on finding this! Just to get an idea what these would be going for, would you mind sharing the price you paid for it?

All the best,
Jean.

thats real purdy :)

I like my PRSs - guitar porn. I have a 99 blue Custom 22, and a funny coloured 96 CE (both are Wide thins which isnt usual on 22 fret PRSs - WT are standard on 24 frets though). It used to be a deep purple colour I believe but PRS had issues with the blue part of the paint for a year or so, that fades badly. i actually like the colour its faded too though.

Heres the CE:

I don't mind sharing the price I paid. The previous owner asked 1750€ online, but I got him down to 1450€ with a trade in of my Vintage Ibanez Flanger (which I got for free). I have no clue whether this is a good price or not!

That's equivalent to ~1844 CAD, which sounds like a good price for a 92 PRS...
