AFIII My Favorite Hi Gain Models

They all sound great! In the AF3, I keep returning to the Mesa TC. That amp was never even on my radar. I'm a huge MB fan, always gravitating to the likes of Mark IIC+, Tri Axis/2:90, Mark V, Road King, & DR. But this Triple Crest preset just works for me, straight away. I also made offers on a couple JP2C's, but the owner's didn't bite. Landed on the Axe III mainly for the effects, but now I'm enjoying all the amp models as well, so I'm glad I didn't buy another amp.
Tight playing as well brother!

Cool track and vid. It kind of proves my long held belief that we each
have an idealized tone in our head and then dial in different gear to sound
as close to that idealized tone as we can.

I know I do that, so I force myself to go to presets that are different to me. (And don't look at what the tone is coming from.)

I do, too. :) I think it is kind of unavoidable, to a degree, and we have to consciously and
intentionally find ways to force ourselves out of that. If we want to. It could be a random preset
we have never used before, or picking up a guitar we have not played in awhile. Those little
nudges can help.

My beef with myself is that when I dial in every, say, "hi-gain amp model" to sound
the same, then I end up playing the same redundant riffs over and over again. Not much
growth in that, is there??

Yup. Mentioning one thing doesn't preclude those other things.

It just seemed, to me, that those different amp models all sounded like they
were dialed in to sound extremely similar. Something I have a LOT of experience
doing myself, with not as good a result. :)

Ditto, minus the high gain part, which isn't mostly what I'm shooting for.

Actually, most of my presets go from cleanish to higher gain, but not that high, and I'm generally less happy with the gainier end of what I come up with.

What's that weird, screechy artifact sound in the center of the full mix? It was really distracting. I didn't hear it at the end when the guitars were soloed.

The JP2C was the most unique sounding. It was interesting that they all sounded so similar in the mix but in the solo bit at the end there were pretty dramatic differences in tonality. I personally liked the tone of the Recto the best.

MIDI bass. Unfortunately, I have no possibility of using the real one atm. Thanks for pointing it out, gonna try to hunt down some offensive frequencies!

Thanks for the input everyone! I agree, in the mix all the amps sound really similar. Funny how obsessing about tone gets pointless as soon as the guitar is put in the mix 😂

Seriously though, using different cabs would make these amps sound completely different. I didn’t want to do that though, just for the sake of showcasing those tiny amp character differences.
