ML Class-A Cab Pack!

Mikko, could you please tell us something about the mic placement number?? for example 57 A1 vs A4, what would be cone and what would be cap? Thanks
I'm glad you asked this question. It's a more complex question than you might realize so here comes the full explanation.

ML Sound Lab IR's are never placed using eyes as that is a very reckless, unreproducible and therefore lazy way to judge a mic position. Every speaker is different even of the same brand (f.ex. V30 vs V30) and therefore requires a slightly different approach even for speakers in the same cabinet. If I would say my mic position is "Cap Edge" then a lazy person would probably only see one or two options. Take the mic to the left or right side of the speaker. But a speaker is a 360 degree object meaning that I can take the mic up and down, left and right but also anywhere inbetween inside that 360 degree spiral and still have a "Cap Edge" position. I would say there are realistically about 12 noticeably different Cap Edge positions per speaker. Also "Cap Edge" may not be the best position for all these different angles. Sometimes it's better to take the mic closer to the center or further to the side. That adds way more options than just 12. Well I haven't even discussed mic angling or mic distance etc. There are literally unlimited different ways you can mic a speaker.

But I don't think that's my job. I think a collection with too many IR's will be hard to use. Even when I've pre-selected a handful of IR's people are still asking for my recommendations. That's why I created the Ace folder. That is all I use personally. I have an extremely tight and scientific approach to what makes a good IR and for single mics the #1 position (Ace position) is the scientifically best microphone position out of 40-80 IR's that I shot at the spot. Positions 2, 3 and 4 are also extremely good IR's since they're still the top 10% of all IR's I shot. I can honestly say that sometimes picking the Ace IR is very difficult and I might have 3 IR's that are all perfectly fitting to be an Ace IR and I just have to pick one. For this reason I think having those 3 extra IR positions is a good safety net. The Alloy folders might have first 10 positions as something I could've thrown into the Ace folder and that is definitely my special sauce. That's where people should go and look for their dream IR's. :)

So to answer your question: It might be completely random. Most of the IR's tend to be somewhere inbetween Cone and CapEdge positions. If I can get away with having a mic really close to the middle of the speaker I will go for it but it rarely happens. :)

Yeah I hear that, I know all the variables involved (I do have 3 ac30's, 2 of them are technically identical yet sound completely different!). The reason I asked is because a few years back while in studio we (me, producer and sound engineers) spent quite some time trying to figure out the difference between the amps and mic placement, and I finally settled on a sweet spot for one of the amps which I still use live today, and that's what I'm trying to achieve with the axe only so that I can leave the amp in the studio. The sweet spot is on the left speaker (facing the amp from the audience prospective) with the mic (I should mention I use a beta 58, which nobody really remembers when creating IR's!!) placed on axis in the middle between cap and cone edge, maybe <1 inch more towards the edge. I guess if you answered by saying something like "the lower the number the closer to cap" that would have helped me to get there "visually" as opposed to "sonically".. None the less, I guess I'll get there by ear! Thanks anyways

That's good to hear! Let me know what you think.

Well, I am not at all a specialist with IR's.
As I use almost exclusively the AC30 TB sim, I am of course interested in nice sounding IR's of AC30.
(I try with more or less success to cover U2 songs with my limited skills :D. On the opposite, Edo is about as good as the Edge himself, so take good care of what he is saying !!) )

It is not that it is impossible to find IR's with this amps, but they are not so common as Marshall, Fender or other High gain Cabs.
Also, when I have seen that there was a pack available for a VOX AC30 TB 64 , I could not resist.
(Currently I use mainly using some nice IR from Morphosis, from axefx.de , Thanks to him)

I am happy to see that there is not hundreds of IR's to choose from, but only pre-selected "nice" IRs.
I must admit that I am not able to select quicly between hundreds of them and/or mix them (as for example fremen and others).
I also don't have enough time to do so in my limited practise time (guitar is and have to remain a hobby for me).

Also your pack was a good solution for me.

Download Pack 18 this morning and very happy with ! Thanks for the presets too , very usefull !!
Best Vox patch without too much tweaking for sure .

Ah now I get it. IIRC the Ace positions were pretty close to where the cap and cone meet. With these speakers it sounded best to raise mic up or down rather than sideways and for some reason the left side of both speakers sounded better. So essentially the mic wasn't very far from that wood that's in the middle of the speaker, but on the left side. I can't remember if the Ace IR was raised or lowered down but the positions were quite symmetric for some reason for both speakers. I think the sweet spots were about an inch away from that wooden block and up or down to where the cone meets the cap. Obviously I do many variations as I'm capable of moving the mic systematically a few millimeters at a time. :) I was quite blown away with the results I got.

It is a kick ass can pack indeed, pretty much all the ir's are very good and usable (which is quite rare!). And yes, I agree that on all ac30's I've owned / borrowed / used, the left speaker always sounds better - God only knows why!

I actually meant the left side of both speakers. ;)
