mixing speakers since forever, going back to a single one

Hi y'all,
I've been mixing speakers in the same cab for the longest time. In my case v30s and k100s, apparently a lot of folks like combining these two speakers for high gain applications. By mere accident I reamped some tracks a couple of days ago and realized I used just the v30 "portion" of my go to irs and behold, the v30 blew the v30/k100 combo right out of the water.

I've been wondering, what's your experience with mixing speakers within the same cab? The older I get the more the "less is more" approach seems to work.
What's the science behind mixing speakers? Some people say one speaker complements the other, some say there's frequency overlapping and comb filtering happening (which I am aware can be a good thing), how much is it a player/guitar/amp combination thingy?
It would be nice if any of you knowledgeable guys (peeking in the IR vendor corner) could chime in and share their thoughts, experience and wisdom.

Thanks and have a great day,

Chris
