MFC finally arrived and no lights!!! HELP please!

Power User
I received my MFC this evening and after plugging it into my AxeFXII with a cat5 cable I got nothing. I presumed the cable was a dud and bought a new one. Still nothing! Am I just brain dead today or is my luck bad and my MFC arrived dead?? I'd appreciate any and all assistance.

Cheers,

Lee

just to rule out all possibilities, have you tried using the power supply+midi cable option (REMOVE YOUR CAT5 WHEN DOING THIS)?

I just removed the cat5 cable and attached the power wart and it lit up and the display came alive. It showed X383 until it timed out. Should I still try the old midi cable method?

As info, I guess I no longer have any Midi cables. Am I going to need to buy some just to troubleshoot this issue? Man this sucks waiting so long for this great unit only to potentially end up with a problematic one.

Take a deep breath, Fractal is awesome with heping out. Let's hope its not but if it is defective they'll take care of you & quickly at that. Def check to see if it works with midi cable maybe reinstall the mfc fw and take it from there. Keep us posted.

I could be your cable (hopefully). It could also be a faulty Ethernet port on the MFC or the Axe II.

at least now you know your mfc can be turned on.
the timeout happens because you are not connected to the axe fx i think.
i guess getting the midi cable to test would allow you to narrow down to whether the mfc is not working or just the ethernet connections.
anyone else can chime in?

Redburst21- I've had great experience with Fractal with my Ultra and my II, but thank for that. I'm just a bit frustrated which is somewhat magnified by the anticipation.

Cobbler- After the first cable didn't work, I assumed it was likely the culprit. Just got home from purchasing a brand new Cat5 and same results. I think I must have given my Midi cables to my buddy who is in California. I'm hoping there might be some method to determine where the problem lies without the need to go out tomorrow and buy Midi cables, especially since I'd planned to use the Cat5 connectivity.

I'd love to hear if there are tests I can perform as I am fairly electronics capable.

Thanks for the input guys!

Thanks Sundance_kiddsg. Yeah, that's how I saw it, too. I was glad to see all the lights from the power wart, but it certainly left me wondering which of the ports is having a bad, bad, day. ;) (Too much time with the kids, huh?)

As info, I just checked the physical connectors in both the MFC and AxeFXII, and none of the 8 pins seems to be bent or out of place. I've tested the new Cat5 cable in a computer connection capacity, and it works fine. I don't however know if all pins are utilized in the computer scenario, to validate this testing. Anyone? No worries if not. I'll touch base with Fractal tomorrow, if we don't figure this out tonight.

Cheers,

Lee

So I would think its the Ethernet port on the MFC or II that is the culprit. Getting MIDI cables wont tell you anything as you have already tested with the wall wart and know it fires up. It might be a workaround for now as you can always use the MIDI connection to be able to use it. But since you intended to use the Ethernet connection that would only be a temporary fix. If I was a betting man I would guess it is your Axe II port since the MFC was recently tested before being shipped. You haven't put your USB cable into the Ethernet port anytime in the past have you? Some users here have done just that and killed the port.

You can always open up the II and see if there is anything lose on the port. Same with the MFC. Let us know what support suggests.

Thanks for the thoughts Cobbler. I'll certainly share what I learn from support.

Lee

Haha, yeah, Tab "A" went into Slot "A". (Kidding of course, as i was attempting to come up with a somewhat analogous scenario relating to assembling something)

:)

The ethernet port on the AXE 2 is extremely finicky. I had to go through 6 different brands of CAT 5 cable before I found one that would "click" in to place on the AXE. When you connect your CAT 5 cable, try manually holding the connecter to the AXE 2 and see if it doesn't go on. I would bet that that is the issue.

Flyingmd - Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I actually gave that a try last night, as a just in case kind of thing. I sure wish that had worked. Very interesting scenario you ran into with the cables before success. Having worked as an IT specialist I'd have thought the specs on Cat5 would have prevented those types of variances. Glad you finally found one that ultimately made yours work. :)

If you had and knew how to use a volt meter, you could test each pin to ground on the axe2,with for example no. 1 pin being the power feed to the MFC101, which should have the highest voltage for powering. The others would be for data transfer. I'm assuming the this is the way the system works. Maybe someone has more info on this. I would also make sure that the pins were not pushed down to far preventing good connection.

Same goes for the MIDI connection. I had to search for another cable with a longer piece of metal to get it in...
So this could be your next problem, is9582... ;)
