M160 IRs?

I stumbled on this mic via IRs in CP5 (a CP which no one seems to really like or talk much about???). Wonder why this mic isn't used more often. Seems to be a one mic solution to what many are trying to do through mixes? I have to say though, the IR captures are VERY inconsistent among those who do offer them.

The M160 is the star of CP 5. That library contains IRs I use often.

The M160 IRs in CP 6 are not as great.

Exactly...I tried the M160s on the Beatle cab and they were not good at all. Trebly with no bass up through position C. At D, the bass came back but the character was not as good. But some of those M160 IRs on CP5 were great. Standouts to me were the Lerxst, TV, and Citrus.

I like ‘m all, as you can see on the partial list of my user cabs below.

In Cab Pack 6, try the C414!

Ribbons are ideal for guitar cabs and The M160 is a great mic, underrated in some ways. However my travels in search of the perfect mic blend on my Mark V (C90/ V30) has ended with the AEA R92. I was using the tried and true blending of a ribbon and a57 as well as many other mic combos All of the high end catagory ( Blue bottle rocket , royer, senney etc etc ) . All that nonsense ended after trying the bright side of the R92 with a 57. After A/B playback in the DAW I found I didn't even need the 57 anymore!!

I would love to get a good IR of my Mesa wide body V30 or open back C90 that sits in the Mark V combo but I do not have a suitable solid sate amp ( matrix) to do so right now.

Until il I get the cycles to do so here is what I feel is the secret sauce to a perfect blend of lows/mid/ high from one mic .

AEA R92 (bright side of mic as it is 2 sided) aim the center of the ribbon at the seam of the cone -> mogami balanced mic cable -> Grace M101 mic pre in ribbon mode (18k load)

the Grace pre is also a very important piece of this puzzle for 2 reasons. 1. The impedance is 18k and that puts a ribbon mic in its sweet spot ( you always here guys say ribbons are dark, well that's beause the typical pre has 600 to 1200 Ohm load. Put a 8k or higher load and a ribbon changes character completely. ) and 2. The Grace is a prestine pre amp with no tranny so you get pure uncolored signal.

If you don't have access to a Grace M101 or AEA TRP or RPQ, all of which properly load a ribbon then a great improvise is a Triton audio Fet Head. It's a transparent inline booster that also loads the mic at 22k Ohms. Just make sure your running that into a clean mic pre.

Ill try try this as soon as I can justify a Matrix but for the guys that are doing this consistently with good results like CK, or FAS, ide love to hear what you think the results are. I can not say enough about the AEA R92!

Do any of the IR guys have one of these mics to sample it? That's a pretty spendy mic at ~$800

OwnHammer used it in the Studio Mix series (= Cab Pack 3).
