Logic Pro issues out of nowhere...

System has been running great ever since I bought this MacPro. Running systems thru the Axe3, use SD3, the whole Spectrasonics suite, etc, etc.

Suddenly the timing of audio, and crashing of Logic has appeared the last 2 days. For example I can create a short loop to jam with, using SD3 pattern looping, and will loop successfully 8+ times, but then (even though I'm not recording) it locks up spinning ball, and only way out is force quit. It occasionally tells me this:

"Logic Pro has detected a MIDI timeout. Please restart your MacBook Pro, then relaunch Logic Pro.

If the problem persists, update all drivers (including audio drivers with MIDI functionality) the the lates version."

Truth is it only happens when I'm running the audio thru the fractal unit. I very recently upgraded AxeEdit and to 31.00.

Is it possible this is some bug with the fractal?

thanks for thoughts,
Luther

Have you installed any new apps recently?
I’ve run into something similar on my last two Macs, and it ended up being caused by software I never expected to be the culprit.

On both machines, I couldn’t run Office apps or QuickBooks without seeing the most random and unpredictable system behavior. Excel, for example, would crash my Mac exactly five minutes after the first startup, then again at weird but repeatable intervals throughout the day. Studio One was affected too — it would never close on its own, and I had to force-quit it every single time.

Back then I had an FM3, and thinking back on it, I was never able to use it reliably as an interface during that period. FM3-Edit worked fine, but recording was a no-go and I didn’t understand why at the time.

Eventually I got a new Mac and didn’t need Office anymore… and everything ran perfectly — right up until the day I installed Excel again. The problems came back immediately. Once I removed Excel from that machine, the system stayed rock-solid for the entire year and a half I owned it. I couldn’t get it to crash no matter what I tried.

Right now, the apps that consistently cause issues for me are: Excel, Chrome, WebEx, and a few specific plugins. I keep a running log of everything I install, and the pattern has been very clear across multiple systems.

This may not be the cause of your issue, and I’m not saying it’s a Fractal problem — but it might be worth looking into whether a recently installed app is interfering with system stability. Some of these background processes hook into audio, network, or system libraries in ways that can cause unpredictable side effects.

Just thought I’d share in case it helps someone track down a similar ghost-in-the-machine situation.

I have seen instances where core audio gets confused. You can try restarting it with sudo kill all coreaudiod. It will automatically restart. You may want to use diskutility to check your drive. Or take it to an Apple Store and run a diagnostic.

What happens if you shutdown Axe-Edit?

What happens if you change the Axe Fx global setting Send Realtime Sysex to OFF?

What happens if you revert to a previous version of the firmware and the editor?

I'll try these - Im suspicious of axe edit. I did a reinstall of that this morning and it didn't solve the problem. Thx!

The other big change is Omnisphere 3 update. But it happens when Omni isn't loaded on the tracks.
There also havent been any changes to SD3, but using that seems to "test" the problem. It doesn't happen immediately, but after a few passes of looping. It all started when I was working on a fairly tasking song, and was loop recording and monitoring a D section that was 48 measures long. When it "crashes" it stops looping, the cursor keeps ticking beyond the section, then spinning ball appears. I'll report back after tests.

Guys - thank you all for your troubleshooting thoughts and tips. I went through some of the suggestions this morning, and then tested slowly and methodically:

Test 1 - Logic and SD3 - Conga loop, played thru MAC computer audio. Result normal operation.
Test 2 - Same as above, added recording in Keyscape multiple tracks. Result normal.
Test 3 - Turned on Axe 3, and played same content outputting thru Axe audio. Result normal! yay!
Test 4 - (fingers crossed) Turned on Axe Edit, and played guitar along with with endless looping track. Results Normal!
Test 5 - Recorded 4 tracks of guitar along with looping track. Results Normal.
Test 6 - Changed presets on Axe3, emulated my normal workflow. Results Normal.
Test 7 - Fired up problem tracks from last 2 days, time and performance back to Normal.

Ok - what gives? Two posts (or more) above recommended going to logic control surfaces, and deleting anything that's in there. Indeed, there was content that had Axe 3 and exclamation mark, and a bunch of numbers and stuff that is beyond my knowledge. I deleted everything on that control surface page before running the tests above. I think that was the solution (well proof is in the pudding).

I really appreciated Intimo's AI doc as well, and I had done a portion of those steps yesterday before posting here.

After those tests and reflection, I returned to Omnisphere 3 tracks, and worked on a Peter Gabriel vibe that is sounding great. Was nice to be back at work with confidence that the tools are working. And man, those Omni 3 sounds are very cool - sonic delight and an amazing palette.
