Lifespan of a Laptop?

My 2013? Macbook pro is filled up (128gb hd) but runs reasonably well. I could probably clean it up lol

I can't think of any reason a 4 year old laptop should be having problems aside from just getting cluttered with shit from people going to websites they shouldn't (mostly). My previous HP work laptop was one of their workstation grade ones, but was 8 years old when I got rid of it. The only problems it had were from the bullshit our IT department installs on all the computers. I had maxed out the RAM, and put an SSD in it over time, but it still ran great. I have a "new" HP laptop now that's coming up on 4 years, no issues. One big difference with work laptops is I don't do anything personal on them. No web surfing, anything that's not work related.

My home laptop is a 2011 MBP, and has had a rough time in the last year. The external GPU went out, so it's the main screen only, and I've had some issues with some of the later Apple OSs for it, but I still take it on trips and it still runs plenty fast. I primarily use the laptop for music related things, and my main desktop for everything else.

2013 MacBook Pro I7 still kicking a$$.

it’s used every single day, with original parts, no crashes or data corruption. Running Logic and final cut , so it gets a workout.

I could not deal with another Microshaft computer. They push updates to programs that make others crash etc. It’s a shit show.
sorry to anyone that loves them, I know I used too. Now I open the lid, get to work, close the lid, and always have a productive day

No, you’re mostly right! MS has made a complete mess of Windows (as if it was ever perfect) The pushed updates and combining a mobile OS with a desktop/workstation OS is a big mistake. I just got a Laptop after not building a Windows power PC in a long time. I was squeezing everything out of the old one and using an iPad for a ton of stuff in the past year or more. I went for a Windows laptop because I couldn’t justify the price of a MBP of equivalent power. That’s my only gripe about Apple. Too $$$. I use to be an Apple hater, but came around with their mobile devices. I was always an intel CPU and chipset with separate Nvidia graphics. No AMD. Things have changed a great deal in the last 10 years and one of the reasons I didn’t build a new desktop was I didn’t have the time to research what was the best and where was the sweet spot price wise. This Lenovo Legion Laptop I got is a great system at a good price. It’s a shame what has happened to the personal computing world.

Having said all that, if money was no issue I would get a $54,000 maxed out Mac Pro!🤪

Use prophylactics
Those must be some heavy duty condoms!!

The Dark Web and plain old porn sites on a normal browser are two different things. I have no need for either, but as a former tech the kiddies do love to get on someone else‘s system and go for a trip down wonderland. It was great trying to explain to parents why their computer was hosed. Or sometimes to the Wife. Even worse.

I used Windows laptops for years. Usually refreshing after about 3 when they became unusable.

Around 2006 I went to Mac. Since then I've owned 3 of them. The old one still runs. My MacBook Pro runs flawlessly for the last 3 years, and I'll get at least 2 more before I refresh, and perhaps relegate this one to a dedicated recording box.

More expensive, but you spend less in the end. And the maintenance is nonexistent.

IMO.

Still have an issue with lack of choices of hardware and software compatibility. Not as a big a deal as earlier. I didn’t have another $1200+ to spare. That’s what I was looking at for an equivalent Mac. Also, as mentioned I‘ve had to service my share of Macs. Software, OS and hardware.

You should take a look at the new Apple Silicon macs. For some reason, geekbench doesn't list them but, if they did, they'd have to top slot on single processor scores.
I'd just make sure you are comparing apples to, well, apples.
My 16G / 8-core Mac mini is running circles around all my other machines (newer 24-core) for ML tasks.

2014 Dell Precision.
You can swap just about anything in this - memory, hdd (4), graphics,...
It came with a Quadro card.
Never any issues besides batteries dying.

I have an Asus ROG G71V from 2009, still in use for recording. I upgraded OS from Vista to Win 7 and later Win 10 Pro. I also upgraded the (2) HDDs to SSDs just because I like fast machines. Only repair was the display cable. And the fan runs quite often...but that´s what other devices do as well I heard... ;)

I agree with all of that.
Yes apple products are expensive, but i look at it this way.
spread the cost of a MacBook pro over 12 years, instead of a pc over 4 years, and it comes close to the same amount. They just last longer, and perform well through the whole life cycle.
I always wanted a Mac Pro, until i realized that a MacBook pro docked and sent to a large screen has enough power to do any audio project. If i were recording an entire orchestra in real time, it might be a different story. My 2013 MacBook Pro with an intel I7 and 500gb ssd drive cost me around $3200 at the time i bought it. Thats a lot but its never crashed. Its been 9.5 years, so far that's $28/ month and going down, with every month that i keep it. It still runs fairly large Logic projects without issue. The day i see the CPU maxed out on a project, is the day ill buy a new one. In all these years, I've spent zero time problem solving PC like issues (endless plagues)
