Let's work on an exacting Petrucci MKIV Lead patch

Hi gang,

I have noticed there are a few petrucci lead patches around, but they are all a bit 'close but no cigar'. Having said that, I have not been able to do any better!

If I could get a direct recording MarkIV lead patch that is exactly the same as JP's, I would long for nothing more from my Axe (well, for the time being anyways  )

His tone is different on different albums of course (but still similar) but perhaps we could try and build some patches that replicated different albums or even different tours? Just some thoughts.

Has anyone worked out how to replicate his MarkIV graphic eq settings? For example, what are the Q values and the db gains for each frequency?

Perhaps if there is anyone with something close, but needs help in some way we could try and work on it together?

Any help on getting a perfect JP patch is much appreciated!

Unfortunately I don't have the ability to contribute to this, but I would gladly sit back and relax while you guys produce and share a perfect Petrucci tone :D

Just trying to say that since I'm new to all of this, I have not enough experience to be able to contribute to exacting anything. Still I'm a huge Petrucci fan, so I was just appreciating OP's suggestion.

just posted a patch on the axechange.
I use IR's in the same position as Fremen

Thank you very much for the patch larsman. I have not had a chance to try it yet, but will do so tomorrow and will definetly provide you with feedback.

I think I am a little slow though - what do you mean by this? Where did Fremen talk about which IR's he used?

Could you please specify exactly which IR's you used for this patch?

cheers,

Here's a short clip I did of one of the lead parts from "The Count of Tuscany." Let me know what you think, and shoot me a PM if you want the patch :D

Guitar used: Ibanez RG 1527 with a DiMarzio D-Sonic in the bridge.

Recording chain: Axe-FX Ultra > BBE Sonic Maximizer (Lo @ 10 o'clock; Process @ 1 o'clock) > M-Audio Profire 610

I'll let you know what I think....Fantastic!

Excellent tone and playing. When you recorded this, were you monitoring loudly? It is probably also your technique but the tone seems to have that nice feedback / break-up in the higher regiters.

Well done. I will be sending you a PM for sure!

thanks for the complement. i will be uploading this to a site when i get home. i wanted to make sure it was worthy first :).

as for the feedback, most of that comes from the d-sonic pickup, which i believe to be the key factor in achieving his tone.

if i could make one change, i need to add some high end fizz. but i cannot seem to do so without making the tone overly sharp. suggestions anyone?

Here are two patches for ya!

Here is the lead patch I used, with some minor tweaking I did earlier today. For this patch you will need the IR's of "fremen" found in this thread: http://www.fractalaudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2219. I used cabs 3 and 7 respectively.

In creating this patch, I borrowed ideas from Shredi, the Axe-wiki, and other users (larsmars and others). I also referenced Petrucci's current tour settings on the Mark V. For audio reference, I was lucky enough to have the stem tracks from "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" which enabled me to quickly A/B parts. This setting is ideal for big open lead passage like "The Spirit Caries On," "Octavarium (Razor's Edge)", etc.

In a similar fashion, I also started on a Rhythm "lead" setting. The above patch is more suited for lead work while this one is more suited for riffing.

IMPORTANT!!! You will need those IR's otherwise these patches will sound Poo Poo!

TIP: To modify the lead patch for faster soloing, engage the filter. Then change the "Delay 2" feedback to 24.8% and the time to 250ms and voila!

And for those curious why there is a pitch block there in front; I use it at different values to achieve different tunings on my 7-string. +1 gives me "Nightmare to Remember," -2 gives me "A Rite of Passage," etc.

Not sure if they're from the actual album, but if you go to the DiMarzio homepage, click 7-string pickups and then click on either the CrunchLab or LiquiFire, there's a sound clip there played by John with no backing, just his guitar tone. But like I said, it might not be his actual album recording, it could just be something he did off the bat. But it might steer you in the right direction, perhaps.

Those definitely sound like tracks from the actual album. I personally wasn't as wild as everyone else seemed to be about his tone on BC&SL, but whatever.

"The Shattered Fortress" solo clip is on the pages for the 7 string versions for both pickups, and the "A Right Of Passage" solo is the clip on the pages of both the 6 string versions.

Do you still have these? The files seem to not be there anymore.

I would like them too.
