LA band with fake Facebook and YouTube followers does European tour no one shows up for

The same thing happened in the Netherlands once, the band Gotcha! bluffed their way into the club circuit and the most important band competition of the country by creating a fake media buzz. That was in the 90's, before the internet. Before people could do a basic google check. Amazing that it can still happen. And stupid that this guy wasn't prepared for it and had gathered an actual band around him that could play. At least Gotcha! could and enjoyed some success after their stunt.

Threatin Milli Vanilli would have been a much better name :p

Sorry, but any band named "Threatin" I automatically will think sucks, even if I haven't heard them. Check out his video. It's hilarious. It's totally public access-quality. He's aping tons of 80's and 90's music video tropes. He comes off as discount Geoff Tate from Queensryche.

Thing thing is, he's not a bad singer or guitar player. He could form a band locally and pay his dues playing clubs and recording demos.

His whole stage persona is cheesy and dated as hell, but with work and mentoring he could be decent. He chose the route of fraud and deception.

"A bit more about those YouTube videos, because this is where shit starts to get REALLY weird. Threatin’s YouTube channel has a number of videos on it and they’re all bizarre in a number of different ways. To start, there are a couple of live clips designed to give the impression that the band has a room packed full of fans, but all of them either show only the band on stage or only the crowd — never both in the same video. What’s more, although there’s no way to prove this, one gets the sense from the audio on these videos that they’ve been overdubbed with the sounds of screaming fans (the performance videos) or music by Threatin (the crowd videos). Here are a couple of those videos, one of which appears on a different YouTube channel with a laughable description that attempts to explain away why the band isn’t even pictured (“Live video of Threatin. Got this video last june. i could only get a few seconds here and there the crowd was pretty wild. i kept almost dropping my phone..great show though.”):"

"Weird, right? But the deception continues. Jered Threatin, the band’s frontman and, it seems, only member, filmed some fake interviews with himself in which he is seen talking to a non-existent person off camera (or perhaps just a buddy) cut in with vanity footage of himself headbanging while playing all the different instruments"

This thread reminds me of a local guy who's truly a legend in his own mind. He makes arguably the worst music videos in the history of forever. They are apparently shot in his garage "sound stage", and he "writes" and "plays" all the parts. What's sad about him is that he really does believe he's phenomenal, and will argue with anyone who offers him constructive criticism. (A good friend of mine has gone around and around with him over ways to improve his video quality, but he insists that his 30-year-old analog video gear is far superior to modern digital tools.) He genuinely believes he's a rock star with legions of fans. He's gotten thousands of Facebook views of his videos, and believes it's because people genuinely like what he's doing. Little does he know that people watch the videos for the sheer trainwreck aspect of it all.

I'm generally very supportive of anyone who's trying to make music, regardless of their talent level, but this guy's a cocky and argumentative asshat with the public relation skills of a badger.

Here's a sample of one of his more "popular" works:

I listened to just a little bit of this but this seems like hilarious gold! I’m going to listen to it in its entire tea when I get home. I may need to pour a couple glasses of wine :)
