KrK monitors & EQ

It seems opinion is split on this one. Working for some people and others are having a similar issue to me. I've never had anything else to compare them to so I can't make any comparisons. They're obviously a cheaper option as far as monitors go though, so if I play around with the setup and they're still not doin it for me I'll just work around it until I can get something better.

I would experiment with the monitors a little.

Try getting some good full program material that you trust that has a known great low freq mix and see what that sounds like.

From your description I'm guessing the room and the speaker placement are both exaggerating some low frequencies probably more than one specific frequency.

You could also test by putting one monitor in the center of a larger room and see if the low freqs are reduced there. The median of a room is the largest low freq null point. Not recommended for accurate listening but is a good test to listen to the room effects. The low freq should be most attenuated by the room at the center.

Thanks for the advice and info Richard! Intersting read. A newb like me doesnt often think of the science involved but it makes total sense. There's only so much I can do with the space I have, but I definitely think speaker placement is causing some, if not all of the issue so that's where I'll be focussing my attention..... when I get a chance!

I have the same speakers and think they sound good overal. But placement really changes how they sound. They sounded the best on ear level speaker stands in a bigger room away from walls and corners. Currently they have to sit on a desk very close to a wall so they do have an exaggerated boom. Putting them on sound isolation pads helped, but nothing can fix bad placement except moving them.

"Putting them on sound isolation pads helped"
I have mine on a pair of these at ear level and the sound is very even

Dr Buds - the Rokit8 monitors are bass heavy.. really geared to the home studio specialising in dance music..

make sure they are a good 18" from any walls..
and if you can, move your desk 2' from the wall and place them on stands [that stand on the floor] so they are away from the walls and not mounted on the desk..
this will calm down and tighten their low end

also..
make the shape of an equilateral triangle from your listening position to the monitors
so the distance from your head to each monitor and between each monitor is the same..
and then angle them so that they point at you [and not past you]

I have a set of Krk rokit 8's. The bigger the speaker the 'boomier' it would get. I have mine leveled to my ears and pointed directly to them as well and sounds great. My EQ's in the back are all at a flat level. Its good with the axe-fx :D

I have a ROkit krk 5's and I think they are boomy as well. Does having at ear level make a big difference? I have it below.

Thanks guys. Obviously these speakers are more suited to dance music with their bass heavy nature and pretty sensitive to setup and position, but those who have this right are getting good results fom them with the axe.

Clarky - unfortunately I can't change the room setup all that much. I'll do what I can and get the speakers as far away from the walls as possible and I'll get some isolation pads for them to sit on. Maybe even a bass trap in that corner of the room would help too??

when I first got my axeII I played through the less expensive Mackies they are bigish but really emphasize the bass and between that and headphones I was always going back and forth too much bass + bommies , too little bass . got worse, much worse with volume !
got frustrating fast . I since bought a EV ZLX 15P powered speaker , and for me it works great . Especially I found when I turn it up the EV really sounds better LOUD .
I 'd say go for the best monitors you can afford and if that doesn't work out you can try one of the many FRFR options available

Yeah I hear ya my Mackies are on tall stands with foam and all , but my room , one is in a corner too and its really an acoustic mess . bass boomin all over

VeryBadMan - I will definitely upgrade at some point. I'm not sure if it's worth going for a FRFR speaker though as I really only play and record at home at moderate volume, no band/live work, so I'd rather spend the cash on some top shelf monitors (at least for the time being).

The corner setup is really not a good one, but what makes matters worse for me is that my studio is setup in a small bungalow separate from the house and I'm pretty sure it has ZERO insulation which, literally, would be amplifying the problem. When I think about it, it's a really shit space for a studio!! Unfortunately I'm only renting this house so I can't do anything about it. Need to hurry up and buy my own place!!

Hi all,

So after a few weeks with the AF2 playing solely through headphones I tried it out through my studio monitors for the first time over the weekend - Krk rokit 8's. I've found that I had to radically alter the global EQ settings to take out all the bottom end as they were VERY boomy, especially with palm muting. Obviously the presets I've dialled in using headphones were always going to sound different through speakers, but none have particularly crazy low frequency settings and some other factory presets I tried were the same. There's a dial on the rear panel to adjust High Frequency, but nothing else. Obviously they're not the ideal speakers to be playing the AXE through, but until I can get a CLR or alike I'm sort of stuck with this setup. Just wondering if anyone else has had experience with these monitors??

Thanks

I have Rocket 8s' and don't find them bass heavy at all. I get better results dialing the Axe in on my Matrix CFR though.

Monitoring is difficult. Ears tend to get used to, more or less, any kind of listening environment. According to my (little) experience, references is very important. Find clips of tones you like and try to match the frequency content such as the low end to that.

Yeah this is something I definitely need to be doing. A "go to" track that I can always reference from.

Not meaning to HiJack but what do you guys think about the Yamaha HS7s? the 8's are too huge for my room. lol

I also use KRK Rokit 8 G2's and I am really happy with them. Mine are on stands and neither are directly against a wall or in a corner. They are a little bass-ier than some of the other monitors I've tried, but I've never found it to be an issue or something I could not dial out in my presets.

Start by making several of these:

Put as many as you can in your vertical corners (horizontal corners are good too)

Let me know if I can help you (or anyone else) with room issues. I'm happy to help!

Thanks for sharing that diggi!! Much appreciated.

If I can't rearrange the room to get it sounding better I may have to do something like that. I'm just trying to avoid going to any extremes with sound proofing/getting the acoustics right as this house is only a rental and I'm hoping to buy my own place next year.

As sgplayer76 suggested, having them on stands and away from the wall would be ideal, but not a luxury I have in this room. I'm just going to do the best I can to reposition things and dial it out with the EQ on my presets, if I have to, after that. My own place - I'll be putting in the time and effort (and $$) to set up it properly and avoid this kind of issue altogether!
