King's X...Amp and IR?

With all these gearheads adding their info to the discussion (and presets, TY!), we'll get there. I have no doubt. Sorry Ty, haha

I went down this rabbit hole a few years back on the AXE II forum. There are some good YouTube vids and print interviews out there. The one thing that sticks with me from pursuing this is even if you find the Lab5 settings he used, there was something "broken" on the amp he used, which kept it always on the verge of ruin due to how he was running it. I wish I could be more specific on the details, but hopefully you'll find the info from straight from the horse's mouth on the webs. Maybe someone else here knows the source I'm referring to and can point you in that direction. Long reply longer, even if we get a Lab5 model, it might still be difficult to reproduce Ty's tone.

Well, this might well explain why Fractal has never modeled it. I always thought it was because they felt other models got close to this. But perhaps it is more that your typical L5 isn't going to give you "this" sound?

I don't believe they choose amps to model based on a player using that amp to get a certain tone out of it. But if nothing in the Axe sounds like it, and there's been offers to model it, I wonder why they haven't done so.

No schematic maybe?

I'm sure it might have something to do with the fact that his original Lab L5' power section broke which contributed to the flavor so he would have to give his prized iconic amp to FAS to be modeled I doubt Ty would do that.

There's an interview where Ty mentions how hard it was to keep that amp going (cue Tomo Petty's
"Breakdown!" :) ), and that there was only one miniscule sweet spot on that amp that worked for him.

May have been the interview he did with Pete Thorn in 2020. Well worth watching for the geeky among us. :)

Can you tone capture it?

Someone in the now deceased and defunct Fractal Forum from way back (2011?) mentioned doing just
that and never followed up on the thread they made. I have been digging on this for awhile now and trying
to dredge up as many clues and leads as I can. :)

I remember that interview! I saw them back in early 2000's at the Galaxy in Santa Anna, Ty was standing in front of Mesa gear along with some Line 6 Rack mount stuff.

I also saw them a few years ago at San Manuel casino in San Bernardino. It was a good show but the sound was not. You couldn't hear Ty or Jerry's vocal at all. I Tried the post Cigarettes video but I guess the file is too large to post here :(

Consolation pic instead!

Looks like Orange gear there in the pic, so shouldn’t we be able to come close with one of the Orange models?

Ty's tone on the first four King's X albums was a result of the Lab Series amp PLUS the active mid-boost pickups in the Elite Strat he used. Unless you also emulate the output of those pickups, simply modeling the amp won't really get you close. Search YT for TheScunion and take a look at the end of his video for Shot of Love. He recreated Ty's rig and walks through it.

It depends on what era of his tone you are after! A lot of the tones he does now are suggestive and not a recreation for the simple fact that it would be impossible to run every piece of gear that he has used over the years on tour.

Phone posting from work so no links, but if you haven't seen the footage on YouTube of Woodstock '94, run don't walk to YouTube! They headlined the first night and the energy is nuts.
Although when Ty chucks his signature Zion 15 feet in the air my heart drops every time.

Yup. I seem to recall Ty saying he uses the Orange amps due to reliability AND because they
only do fly dates now and he has settled on them as the best backline option for him to do an
entire live show. My guess is if they were touring like they did back in the day and could finance
a proper crew he would probably not be using the Orange Crush.
